  2. Market Drayton woman critically injured by Californian rock fallpublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 29 September 2017

    A woman, originally from the Market Drayton area, is critically ill in hospital in California after a rock fall which killed her husband.

    Andrew Foster, who was 32 and his 28-year-old wife Lucy, who have since moved to Cardiff, were on a climbing holday in the Yosemite National Park.

    During a series of rock falls on Wednesday, a slab of granite, said to have been as big as an apartment block, broke off from the famous El Capitan Rock, falling 600 feet on top of them.

    The couple were flown to hospital and Lucy remains in a "critical condition."

    A former Masterchef contestant launches a new festival in Market Drayton this weekend.

    The Ginger and Spice Festival will celebrate the town's links with gingerbread through talks, demonstrations and events.

    James Sherwin has also appeared on the Channel 4 show The Taste alongside Nigella Lawson.

    The future of a Ellesmere festival is in doubt after people objected to paying to gain entry to a public space.

    Visitors were asked to help cover the running costs of Merefest which takes place next to the water.

    Organisers say ticket sales fell below what was expected and they aren't sure if there's enough money to run the event again next year.

    BBC News understands that armoured vehicles partly made in Telford and designed to protect British troops from roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan keep breaking down.

    Soldiers say the Foxhounds are very unreliable in hot conditions. Defence sources have not disputed that there have been issues.

    League One leaders Shrewbsury Town have appointed Crawley Town strength and conditioning coach Marc Lindsey to replace the departed Andy Hodgen.

    Lindsey has also worked for Peterborough United and fills a role which has been vacant since Hodgen left in pre-season.

    Campaigners believe more 20mph speed limits would reduce the number of accidents on Shropshire's roads.

    Public Health England says more than 400 people were killed or injured on the county's roads between 2013 and 2015 which is "significantly worse" than the national average.

    A conference is being held at Theatre Severn tomorrow, where experts will make a case for lower limits.

  8. Council wants lessons to be learned after finger is lost in hand dryerpublished at 08:58 British Summer Time 29 September 2017

    Shropshire Council says an incident in which a woman lost the end of her finger in a hand dryer at a Shrewbsury restaurant could have been avoided.

    In May last year, a woman in her fifties who has learning difficulties, was drying her hands in the machine which didn't have a grill covering a rotating fan inside.

    Nocaz Limited, which owns the Dragon King on Old Potts Way, was ordered to pay £16,000 in a fine and costs at Telford Magistrates' Court.

    The authority says the whole matter could have been avoided had Nocaz checked the equipment properly.

    An incident during an Telford Tigers ice hockey match at the weekend is being investigated by the police.

    They say they are looking into allegations of an assault and are speaking to the parties involved.

    The National Ice Hockey League is also investigating the incident.

    The Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper, Dean Henderson, has been called up to the England Under-21 squad for next week's Euro qualifiers against Scotland and Andorra.

    This latest call-up means he'll miss two Shrewsbury games; the Checkatrade Trophy tie with West Brom and the League One derby trip to Walsall.

  19. Home for adults with learning difficulties accepts 'inadequate' ratingpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 28 September 2017

    The owners of a home for people with learning disabilities in Much Wenlock say they accept the findings of a Care Quality Commission report which has rated it "Inadequate, external".

    Inspectors saw evidence of people being "assaulted and emotionally abused on a regular basis" at Darwin Place and a number of whistleblowers had contacted the CQC with concerns.

    The owners, Swanton Care, say they've put a plan in place to address all concerns and have made changes to the management team.
