    An inspection of a home for people with learning disabilities in Much Wenlock, external has found evidence of people being assaulted and emotionally abused on a regular basis. a health watchdog says.

    Darwin Place, in Southfield Road, has seven residents with learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorders and a number of whistleblowers contacted the Care Quality Commission with concerns and during its visit last month.

    The management of medicines at the home was also found to be "unsafe" and the report highlighted a lack of consistent management, with the home having four managers in two years.

    Darwin Place has been told to improve, or face losing its licence.

    The police believe a man who exposed himself on Oakfield Road, in Shawbirch, on Tuesday might be the same man who flashed at a dog-walker by Shawbirch Ponds last Wednesday.

    On that occasion the man followed her around the pool, before she managed to run off.

    Extra patrols are being made to reassure people.

  3. Chinese restaurant fined after woman loses part of fingerpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 28 September 2017

    The owner of a Chinese restaurant in Shrewsbury has been fined following an incident in which a diner lost the end of one of her fingers after injuring it in a hand-dryer.

    Shropshire Council says the woman in her 50s, who had severe learning difficulties had been eating at the Dragon King, in Shrewsbury, in May and had put her hand in the air outlet, which wasn't protected by a grill.

    The restaurant owner Nocaz Limited admitted a charge of failing to protect its customers, brought by Shropshire Council, and was ordered to pay a £12,000 fine, plus costs of £4,728 and a victim surcharge.

    Centre Warren Tait has returned to the Telford Tigers.

    He played for them in the English Premier League last season.

  5. Rural maternity units to stay closed until end of yearpublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 28 September 2017

    The maternity units in Ludlow, Oswestry and Bridgnorth will remain closed for women planning to give birth until the end of the year, a hospital board meeting has confirmed.

    The rural units will still be open for day appointments.

    Earlier in the year there had been a series of short-term maternity unit closures and the decision to close the three units was made in July, so staff could be focused on the main maternity centres in Shrewsbury and Telford.

    The meeting this afternoon heard a number of new staff had been recruited, but that more were still needed.

  6. Safe standing appeal needs less than £10,000published at 14:08 British Summer Time 28 September 2017

    The online appeal, external set up to pay for a safe standing area at Shrewsbury Town's stadium is just short £9,263 of its revised target.

    When it was launched at the start of August, it was aiming to raise £75,000 to pay for over 500 rail seats, but that target was reduced, after talks with the contractors.

  8. Shropshire hospitals involved in big baby studypublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 28 September 2017

    A national study involving maternity services in Shrewsbury and Telford is looking at new ways of protecting large babies during labour.

    The Big Baby Trial will look into whether mothers should deliver their offspring early in a bid to reduce complications.

    One of the major problems with delivering a larger baby can be difficulty delivering the shoulders after the head has come out - leading to a condition called Erb's Palsy.

    About 4,000 women will be taking part in the study and will either randomly be put into labour early, or wait for the onset labour to start naturally, to establish the safest method of care.

  9. Overnight A&E closure 'not an easy thing to do'published at 13:00 British Summer Time 28 September 2017

    Closing Telford's Accident and Emergency department overnight is not a simple thing to do, the chief executive of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust has said.

    It is being considered as an emergency measure, if the trust loses any more A&E consultants, but Simon Wright says there are a lot other services at the Princess Royal Hospital which are linked to it and "unpicking" those links would take some time.

    Mr Wright also says "we have no desire to reduce our emergency services on either site" and apologised if talk of overnight closures was causing anxiety, but said it would be wrong not to draw up contingency plans.

    A music industry magazine is claiming the future of V Festival at Weston Park is in doubt.

    Music Week, external claims to have been told by several sources that the promoters could pull out of the venue after poor ticket sales.

    The promoters haven’t yet commented on the report.

  13. Woman appears in court charged with murdering sonpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 28 September 2017

    A 44-year-old woman has appeared before Telford magistrates, charged with the murder of her seven-year-old son near Church Stretton last week.

    Lesley Speed, of Rushbury Road, in Wall-under-Heywood, been remanded in custody until a Crown court appearance on Monday.

    Archie Spriggs was found dead at the house last Thursday and she was taken to hospital suffering serious arm and neck injuries.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission has made several recommendations, after a report found that said the death of a vulnerable teenager in Bristol could have been prevented.

    In October 2014, Jason Conroy murdered Melissa Mathieson, 18, at a Bristol home providing special care for adults.

    Jason attempted to assault a teacher at a school in Shropshire in 2013, but West Mercia Police did not record the allegation of assault when it was reported later that year.

    Those actions meant there was little intelligence about Conroy's behaviour and he wasn't monitored to the extend he could have been.

    The continuing consultant shortages in the Shrewsbury and Telford accident and emergency departments will be discussed at a hospital board meeting today.

    The managers will have to decide what they will do if another consultant leaves and have previously said they would consider closing Telford's A&E department overnight.

    The shortage of consultants in Shropshire's two A&E departments has been a problem for a number of years and the hospital's chief executive Simon Wright says they're only kept running by the "goodwill of staff".

    Shropshire's Danny Bidgood flies out to Italy today to fight in the World Judo veteran championships on Saturday.

    The 70-year-old from Wellington prides himself on his super fitness and says suppleness is just as important as speed and strength.

    AFC Telford United forward Marcus Dinanga believes the Bucks can still make the National North play-offs, despite their early season inconsistency.
