The hospitals believe they will need an extra 100 beds during January.

    Quote Message

Our commissioners have put aside that money and we also have funding as part of the NHS, so there is money in the system that we can use. If somebody wants to give me some more money, I will never say no, of course it always helps. But I suppose what we are doing though is making sure the money we do have, we are spending wisely."

  13. Dalian Atkinson toxicology tests delayedpublished at 16:53 British Summer Time 26 September 2017

An inquiry into the death of the former footballer Dalian Atkinson has been delayed because of problems at a private forensic testing firm which was carrying out toxicology tests.

A statement from the Independent Police Complaints Commission, read to the Shropshire Coroner, John Ellery, today, said samples were having to be re-tested after a "significant number of cases" had been "potentially compromised" by Randox Testing Services.

The IPCC said the re-testing should be completed next week and sent off to the pathologist, who would complete a post mortem report, but it couldn't say when its own report into Mr Atkinson's death would be complete.

The National Police Chiefs' Council said in May that a criminal inquiry was under way into allegations of "data manipulation" linked to Randox Testing Services.

A pre-inquest review, which had been scheduled for today, has been postponed until January.

Dalian Atkinson died last August after being shot with a police Taser in Telford.

    Quote Message

A quality failure within Randox Testing Services was subsequently identified, which potentially compromised a significant number of cases across the criminal justice system nationally. Due to the number of cases impacted by this issue, Avon and Somerset Police were tasked to co-ordinate the re-testing nationally and they categorised the cases in order of priority."

    Paul Marriott, IPCC

Mr Wright said the trust were also able to convert some beds which have been used for day surgery cases in the past.

The hospitals are planning to spend around £3m to boost services over the busy winter period.

    Quote Message

Because of the improvements in day case surgery, we don't need quite as many surgical beds, so we've changed some of the beds around to create more medical bed capacity. We've also had a look at where we've got some clinical spaces that have been taken up and converted into either offices or gyms, this sort of thing. We're going to turn those back this winter, back into clinical space for patients."
