    A three-year programme to demolish the main parts of a power station in Shropshire could begin next spring.

    Planning documents for the process, put forward by Ironbridge power station's owner Uniper, say the main cooling towers will be blown up, but the full timetable hasn't yet been worked out.

    Material from the demolished chimneys will be used to fill in ponds used to store the cooling water.

  4. Warning about rogue tree surgeons in Telfordpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    People in Telford are being warned about unskilled and uninsured workmen posing as tree surgeons.

    Telford and Wrekin Council says it's been getting reports of them knocking on doors in the Apley area and offering to cut down trees on local authority land for hundreds of pounds.

    The authority said the trees are "badly hacked and fall causing damage to property".

    The council says it is working with police to track down the people involved.

  6. Meeting to discuss car parking changespublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    A public meeting is taking place in Shrewsbury this evening to discuss planned changes to parking charges.

    The Shropshire Council proposals would see some car parks in the town centre becoming more expensive and the charges being enforced later into the evening.

    Other car parks would become cheaper.

    The meeting at the University Centre Shrewsbury starts at 18:00 and councillors Steve Davenport and George Candler will be there.

    A cat at a rescue centre in Shropshire has been given pink false nails to stop him scratching himself.

    Archie arrived at Rose Cottage Cat Rescue, near Craven Arms, at the start of the year with a wound on his neck.

    But it has failed to heal and staff at the centre say he's making it worse by scratching it.

    A vet suggested they try attaching the plastic false nails to his back paws and Sarah Wells, from the centre, said they had been able to get some from the US.

    The false nails are sometimes used for cosmetic reasons, to alter a cat's appearance, but she said a few days after fitting them, they seemed to be working.

    The number of cars being stolen in the West Mercia area has risen by more than 25% in the past three years.

    Figures from RAC Insurance show in 2013, 291 vehicles were taken, but last year that had gone up to 368.

    West Mercia Police, external said the rise in the recorded crime was down to a need to comply with national crime recording standards.

  9. Collection boxes raise nearly £3,500 for rough sleeperspublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    Nearly £3,500 has been donated to rough sleepers in Shrewsbury by people leaving money in donation boxes around the town.

    They were installed in the town centre last year as an alternative to giving the money directly to homeless people on the streets.

    Shropshire Council says in the past year, some of that money has been used to get 10 people off the streets by funding their initial rent payments.

    A group of metal detectorists from the US have discovered a Papal seal and French silver coin from the reign of Henry II in fields near Oswestry, in Shropshire.

    The lead seal (pictured below) is thought to have been made between 1458 and 1464 and would have been used to stamp decrees known as Papal Bulls.

    It is thought to be only the ninth to be found in the county.

    The French coin is thought to have been minted in Paris in 1553 and has a hole in the middle, suggesting it might have been worn as jewellery on a broach or pendant.

  11. Motorcyclist in hospital with serious injuriespublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    A motorcyclist is in hospital with serious injuries after a crash in Telford last night, police say.

    His off-road bike was in collision with a VW Golf near the junction of Priorslee Road and Furnace Road at 20:10.

  12. Telford pipe burst in numberspublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    Water supplies in and around Telford should be back to normal today after the major pipe-burst at the weekend, but Severn Trent says some homes might still be seeing murky water coming out the taps.

    The company says it is perfectly drinkable, but is continuing to hand out bottles of water at the Tesco in Madeley and Birchmeadow Park in Broseley.

  13. More historical sex abuse claims against Shropshire doctorpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    Six more alleged victims of historical sex abuse by a Shropshire GP have contacted police.

    Five people had previously come forward to make allegations against Dr Gerard Rogerson, who worked in Whitchurch, Shropshire, before his death in 2000.

    The men and women claim they were abused in the 1970s when they were all children, lawyers said.

    Some have kept the abuse a secret from their families for 40 years, Victoria Neale from Hudgell Solicitors said.

    The man in charge of Shropshire's two main hospitals says too many junior doctors are being assigned to inner city trusts at the expense of rural areas.

    The chief executive of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals trust, Simon Wright, has arranged to meet Health Education England to try and address his concerns.

  18. Complaints made against Council risespublished at 09:59 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    The number of complaints made against Shropshire Council has risen slightly on previous years.

    Out of nearly 2,000 cases, 46% were concerns being raised, an increase of 5%.

    More than two-thirds of complaints relate to five areas including adult social care, children's services, highways, planning and recycling.

    The report which goes before the ruling Cabinet today also shows there's been a rise in the number of people complimenting the authority.

    Motorcycle thefts in the West Midlands have risen by more than half in the first six months of this year, according to the Motorcycle Action Group.

    The number of bikes stolen between January and June increased by 51% compared with same period in 2016.

    Riders are being warned the rise could be due to vehicles being stolen to carry out crime.

    Four hundred robberies by riders were recorded during the last three years.
