This is where you have elite defences step up in the play-offs and win championships. To have a turnover and be on the 30-yard line, most teams in the regular season are going to punch that in, 10-0, people are hanging their hats.

For the Texans to come out and make a stop like that, two field goals back-to-back, that's incredible.

You can't ask for more if you're the Texans: turnover deep in your own territory, Will Dissly makes a big drop. You hold them to a field goal. That's exactly what you want your defence to do.

Cameron Dicker sends one between the uprights from 39 yards to double LA's lead. That's a great result for Houston after the shock of that turnover from their opening offensive drive, which can really shake a team's confidence.

This Texans defence is the real deal though.

  5. Sack - Herbert goes downpublished at 21:53 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    LA Chargers 3-0 Houston Texans

And of course Will Anderson is there as Justin Herbert is dropped for a sack that results in the loss of nine yards. Houston's defence fighting hard here to recover from the offensive turnover.

Will Dissly then drops a long pass and the Chargers are having to go for another field goal.

  6. Turnover - Ball's out!published at 21:50 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    LA Chargers 3-0 Houston Texans

From the very first play of the game for the Texans offence they've turned the ball over! Houston have a big problem here...

John Metchie took the catch but Alohi Gilman rips the ball from his grasp and Derwin James dives on the ball to claim it back for the Chargers right away.

  7. Can Texans protect Stroud?published at 21:47 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud took 109 hits in 2024, the second-most in the NFL.

The sophomore year star was also the second-most sacked quarterback in the league (52), behind only Caleb Williams (68).

  8. field goal

Field goal - Chargerspublished at 21:45 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    LA Chargers 3-0 Houston Texans

Cameron Dicker, the kicker, converts a simple 35-yarder and the Chargers take the lead.

That was a promising opening drive for LA, but as so often in the NFL when you get into the red zone things become just that little bit tougher and Houston were able to get a big stop in the end.

Let's see what CJ Stroud can do....

  9. Stuffed!published at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    LA Chargers 0-0 Houston Texans

The Chargers fail to convert on third-and-one as JK Dobbins is absolutely smashed at the line and driven back for a loss of a couple of yards and that drive has stalled.

Here comes the field goal unit.

  10. Postpublished at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    LA Chargers 0-0 Houston Texans

The Chargers are moving the ball with well so far with classic Jim Harbaugh football - establishing the run then working off play-action, as they do now with Will Dissly, but he only gets nine yards so that brings up third and short

  11. Herbert heroicspublished at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    Justin Herbert

Justin Herbert has thrown for more passing yards in his first five season in the NFL than any other quarterback has managed in league history, but it's his ball security that has stood out this season.

Having only thrown three interceptions he has produced something only Aaron Rodgers has this season.

How about the confidence that Justin Herbert shows? Herbert had the opportunity to take the ball and run, but he got it to Tucker Fisk for the first down.

C.J. Stroud is finding ways to find the different weapons that he has. You give him more than 2.4 seconds in the pocket and he's going to make those shots.

Whether you're taking those shots in the middle of the field or big shots down the field, this is what he loves to do. The Texans are going to need these types of plays.

  14. Texans defence keypublished at 21:41 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

The Texans defence allowed just one 300-yard passing performance all season (Week 11 v Dallas).

They allowed opposition quarterbacks to complete just 58.8% of passes, the best record in the NFL.

The AFC South champions had the 11th best run defence, yet allowed 100-plus rushing yards in eight games. On four occassions they allowed over 180.

One defensive star to keep an eye on is defensive end Danielle Hunter, tied fifth in the NFL for sacks (12).

  15. Great play!published at 21:40 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    LA Chargers 0-0 Houston Texans

Tucker Fisk brings in just his eight catch of the season, and it's a beauty as Justin Herbert goes on the scramble before lobbing a pass for his bulky tight end to move the chains again.

  16. 'Harbaugh loves Herbert'published at 21:38 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

LA Chargers 0-0 Houston Texans (21:30)

    Phoebe Schecter
BBC Sport NFL columnist on Sky Sports

Jim Harbaugh (Chargers head coach) is quirky, he's allowing peple to be themselves.

He loves Justin Herbett (Chargers quarterback) so much. Herbert has needed this, it's transformed what he's doing. Harbaugh tells him he's the best, he tells him to run. Herbert is a beast out there. Harbaugh has changed the culture at the Chargers.

  17. First down!published at 21:37 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    LA Chargers 0-0 Houston Texans

JK Dobbins breaks a couple of arm tackles to rumble for nine yards and pick up the opening first down of the game.

  18. Game notespublished at 21:37 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    LA Charger 0-0 Houston Texans

Jim Harbaugh's Chargers are one of two road favourites in the wildcard games, with six away wins this season, thanks to quarterback Justin Herbert having the most efficient year of his career and the meanest defence in the NFL allowing just 17.7 points a game.

CJ Stroud's stuttering Texans attack eclipsed 23 points just twice in their final 11 games, and went 1-5 against play-off teams and 1-5 against top 10 scoring defences. They'll need their defence, which is the second-best at pressuring quarterbacks in the play-offs, to win this one.

  19. Kick-offpublished at 21:36 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    LA Chargers 0-0 Houston Texans

And we're under way! Houston kicks us off so the Chargers will have the ball first. They're 6-3 all time against the Texans and looking for their first play-off win since 2018.

  20. QB comparisonpublished at 21:35 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    NFL play-offs

Justin Herbert dominates the head-to-head with CJ Stroud, who has struggled a bit in his second year in the NFL. Who would you rather have under centre?
