    What's Jacob Bethell got then?

He emerges for his first Test in England, his first match against the red ball for six weeks, with his side under pressure.

Siraj has worked quite hard for that wicket. He was just trying to get a little bit of cut or jag back in. That was a really good ball.

Joe Root is out. A massive moment in this game.

It was another lovely delivery from the fiery Mohammed Siraj, nipping back off the seam and scooting on into pad. Root reviewed but that was always optimistic. It would have hit leg stump comfortably.

Big moment. It has hit on the knee roll. It can only be missing leg.

    Joe Root is given lbw!

He has reviewed but he looks worried. I don't think he has hit it.

Siraj is seething inside. Two have gone through that slip region. That one was perfectly guided right into that gap.

    Woooft!

Harry Brook drills a drive into the ground and it's arrowing in on bowler Akash Deep's nose before he gets his hands up in the nick of time. The umpire steps in to check Deep doesn't need any further treatment.

Had he not deflected the ball, his teeth and nose might have needed some work.

As a former captain Root needs to tell Brook to calm down. If these two get their heads down, they can go and get a big first innings lead.

The Oval collectively tenses up for a moment as Mohammed Siraj confidently appeals for lbw against Joe Root. Shubman Gill is immediately signalling that Root got an inside edge and he's right. Root would have been struggling without it but that's irrelevant.

In England's first 25 overs there were 28 boundaries. That is the third-most ever in the first 25 overs of a Test match innings.

Joe Root drives gloriously for four off Mohammed Siraj's bowling.

There's some competition but that's one of the shots of the day.

It's more contrasting when you have someone like Joe Root at the other end who's organised, gets back, tucks it away and looks very tidy. It's that contrast between Root and Harry Brook who is, at times, very manic.

A few of you have asked similar to that previous message.

Rishabh Pant was replaced as a wicketkeeper at Old Trafford when he was injured but that sub, Dhruv Jurel in that instance, was not able to bat. He could only take the gloves.

As it stands, Test cricket's playing conditions do not allow injury subs, unless it's for a keeper. You can read more on the issue here.

Why can’t England have a substitute batsman for Woakes like India did when Pant had an external injury?

Four byes down the leg side help England's cause as the final over before drinks costs seven runs. The feistiness seems to have settled down in the past few overs. Time for everyone to have a pause.

15% of all deliveries have gone to the boundary today, the highest figure seen for a day's play in England and the third highest globally since 2006 (min 200 balls bowled).

That is just shocking. Harry Brook's dancing down the pitch with the keeper right behind him.

Getting stumped by an off-spinner is one thing, but imagine getting stumped by a seamer.

At the minute you can't gift Mohammed Siraj or Akash Deep a wicket.
