This is what England want to do. They won't sit around and wait for India to hit that decent length. They don't want to wait for a ball with their name on it.

Akash Deep has got this ball talking a bit.

That's exactly what you do when the ball has hit the shoulder of your bat the shot before.

An extraordinary shot from Ben Duckett.

'That's an extraordinary shot!' - Duckett's reverse ramp flies over slip for six

Akash Deep struck Ben Duckett in a delicate area, unsuccessfully reviewed an lbw, got the ball to jump up at the diminutive batter, and had an edge fall short of the fielder at gully.

But Duckett gets the last laugh, reversing the final ball of the over for six. Boink.

The extra bit of bounce you get at The Oval has saved Ben Duckett.

Not out. It was going over the top.

After a lengthy monologue to Shubman Gill, Akash Deep convinces his captain to review a possible lbw against Ben Duckett.

Deep was very keen. Gill took a bit of persuading.

What is this chat of Atkinson only being in contention for the Ashes? He should start every game he is fit for. Too many short memories. Best English bowler last summer.

The difference between the two bowlers at the minute is Mohammed Siraj isn't hitting the seam, he's presenting an up-right seam and it's hitting the middle of Zak Crawley's bat.

If England can start hitting one of the seamers and make them lose their confidence then it'll be difficult for India.

Zak Crawley picks a gap in the covers and is rewarded with four runs. And there's another boundary, this time through mid-wicket.

Mohammed Siraj responds with two dot balls, Crawley solid in defence. The slip cordon applauds.

I think England will go for it a bit more and on this surface you have to go dashing to put pressure on the bowler.

The camera roams the stands and picks out Peter Reid and Roy Hodgson.

Akash Deep is briefly interested in an lbw against Zak Crawley, who is struck on his back leg. Just a single off Deep's first over of the day.

Atkinson has barged his way in to contention for a spot on the plane this winter. What a performance. As good as I’ve ever seen him bowl.

    Nick, Warminster

Be silly at this stage not taking Atkinson to Aus... Absolute weapon that is only going to improve.

Throughout that innings, Gus Atkinson found 1.1° of swing and 0.7° of seam, the most movement off the pitch in any innings of his Test career to date.

Combining this lavish movement with his fourth highest good line and length percentage (44%) of any innings of his career, makes for a formidable bowling performance from the Surrey seamer.

If India can keep England to 300 then they'll feel they're right in it. There's no Chris Woakes for England and sunshine tomorrow.

Three deliveries to get his eye in and then Ben Duckett goes bang, punching the ball through point. He picks up three as the rapid Ravindra Jadeja hunts the ball down in the deep.

The first boundary of the innings goes to Zak Crawley, who finishes the over with a four.

England still to bat so difficult to judge the pitch until then but maybe concerns over the quality (or perceived lack thereof) of England’s bowling attack were a bit unfair!

The Bazballers have been quite sensible so far this serious. I think they'll come out dashing here and play a few shots.

That will be risky. If the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep get it right then it'll be difficult for England. If they knock England off their line and length then the ball could fly into all parts.
