I’ve sent quite a few texts in calling this attack toothless, so I’d like to take credit for this spirited effort from Carse this evening.

  2. Ind 58-3published at 17.1 overs

Last over of the day and KL Rahul knocks Ben Stokes' first delivery to mid-wicket and takes a single.

He's at the non-striker's end, probably for the remainder of play.

Brydon Carse is absolutely flying, every ball he is pumped up. He's got into a brilliant spell.

  4. Ind 57-3published at 17 overs

Akash Deep is fine to continue, thank goodness.

He defends the next two deliveries from Brydon Carse, the second shot prompting finger pointing between batter and bowler.

Ben Stokes applauds - I haven't seen such great panto since the late-90s at the Watford Palace.

Carse's final delivery then whips past Deep's bat - the seamer appeals, but England won't chance a second review of the over.

No surprise to see Ben Duckett sarcastically clapping the India physio coming on, just as India's players did not for him and Zak Crawley last night.

  6. Not outpublished at 16.3 overs

    Ind 57-3

    Close, but no cigar.

Ball tracking has umpire's call for a strike on the very top of leg stump - Deep survives and England retain their review.

But now the India physio has run on to take a look at Akash Deep - what is this chicanery, the likes of which I have never seen?

  7. England reviewpublished at 16.3 overs

But they'll take a look at this one!

Another strike on Deep's pads, and England will send this upstairs and see if they can take a further bite into India's middle-order.

  8. Ind 57-3published at 16.1 overs

Brydon Carse strikes Akash Deep on the pad... but it's heading down leg side and England won't review after initial excitement.

  9. Ind 57-3published at 16 overs

KL Rahul takes the single to third from the fourth delivery of the over, meaning Akash Deep will face the last two deliveries of the over.

Joe Root is leading the accelerating thunderclap for each ball as Stokes starts his run-up.

Deep takes a single through backward point to retain the strike.

  10. Ind 55-3published at 15.1 overs

England are fired up for these last few overs.

Joe Root is revving up the crowd, Ben Stokes furiously gestures for his fine leg fielder to chase down KL Rahul's shot quicker as India's batters take two.

Brydon Carse is delivering it. Pressure on India now.

    Gill lbw b Carse 6 (Ind 53-3)

    All reds!

Struck on the knee roll, ball tracking has a strike three quarters up the middle stump.

The India captain departs, and Akash Deep will walk out as night watch for a very tricky last 10 minutes.

  13. India reviewpublished at 15 overs

But now does Brydon Carse have his man?

He strikes Shubman Gill on the pad and that looks gone.

Gill, the form man and captain, feels he has to review.

Two balls previously he had lashed a waist-high Carse full toss through the covers, bringing up his side's fifty - now he may be on his way.

  14. Postpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time

    Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on Test Match Special

England just needed a spell like Brydon Carse is having at the moment, that little bit of inspiration for three or four overs.

  15. Not outpublished at 14.1 overs

    Ind 47-2

Shubman Gill was right, nothing on it.

A fair space between bat and ball, not sure what the noise was given lots of England fielders seemed convinced they'd heard something.

  16. India reviewpublished at 14.1 overs

Up go England's fielders, up goes the umpire's finger!

But Shubman Gill reviews instantly, he doesn't think he's got an edge on Brydon Carse's delivery, which flew through to Jamie Smith behind the stumps.

  17. Ind 47-2published at 14 overs

Ben Stokes' delivery slips down the leg side and KL Rahul helps it on his way through an empty fine leg for four.

That takes him to 29, and he then plays out five dots.

  18. Postpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time

    Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on Test Match Special

That was class from Brydon Carse. He set Karun Nair up perfectly with the previous deliveries going away and then the dismissal a massive in-swinger.

Can you keep posting downbeat England fans' messages lambasting our bowlers? It seems to draw out an Indian wicket each time.

  20. Ind 43-2published at 13 overs

Shubman Gill twice drives at Brydon Carse's from his first two deliveries and twice fails to make any contact.

He gets the third attempt right, but Chris Woakes chases the ball down and Gill is restricted to two.
