Misjudgment by a long way. I thought it was a massive in swinger from Brydon Carse but Karun Nair just misjudged it. This was gun barrel straight.

  2. wicket

    Nair lbw b Carse 14 (Ind 41-2)

    Very out.

Karun Nair doesn't bother reviewing that, he's trapped bang in front not playing a shot.

Brydon Carse sends down an effective riposte to Andy from Liverpool after reading his message between overs.

Out walks Shubman Gill, and England suddenly have their tails up.

The bowling attack is desperate for Atkinson and Wood. But even with those two back fit, there is no chance that the two of them plus Archer would be able to manage the workload of five Tests consecutively in Australia. Carse lacks the requisite quality, and persevering with Woakes, when he will be ineffective down under, just makes you wonder more and more why Anderson was told to retire. And that's before we discuss the spin option...

Overall, England have bowled 41% full deliveries in their first 10 overs and attacked the stumps 23% of the time - their fifth-highest rate since ball tracking data is available.

  6. Ind 39-1published at 11 overs

A change at the Pavilion End after drinks, as Brydon Carse replaces Chris Woakes.

Three singles to start the over, then KL Rahul has to block out a solid yorker from the Durham seamer.

One more past mid-on sees Rahul retain the strike.

England need to have India at 40-3. That's what I said before this innings began, so they need to pick up a couple of wickets fairly quickly if they are to have a chance to win this Test.

Today, Jofra Archer has bowled 50% of his deliveries on a fuller length (<6m) - the joint second-most in his first spell of four overs. The most remains 52% against Australia at Leeds in 2019.

  9. drinks break

    Ind 35-1published at 10 overs

Not how Ben Stokes would have wanted to start, he over-steps then sees the follow-up guided past the cordon for four.

He finishes well though, sending a rising delivery past the hands of KL Rahul.

    The players will take drinks.

Absolutely zero threat from the England bowlers. India could chase this down batting with umbrellas, this game is over.

    Tim

Time for the England players to admit to themselves they're not as good as they think they are. Ditch the arrogance and start to respect the game of Test cricket?

As soon as that catch had gone down, everyone in the crowd and the England players have had a little bit of their hope drained out. Now they need something to regain that momentum.

  12. Ind 30-1published at 9 overs

Double the Nair runs from the next Chris Woakes over, with a two through mid-wicket.

India will be happy to work their way steadily to their target of 193.

Now then, Ben Stokes is bringing himself onto bowl in place of Jofra Archer...

Here's caught and bowled chance for Chris Woakes.

KL Rahul has moved from five to 17 since that chance was put down.

Just a Karun Nair single from this over too, knocking Jofra Archer into mid-wicket.

  15. Ind 27-1published at 10 overs

Another drive into the covers, but a diving Ollie Pope cuts off Karun Nair's shot off Chris Woakes' delivery.

    India just get a single.

India’s bowlers are simply better than England's. In every innings of this series they’ve looked like the host nation. England don’t know what length to bowl, what line to bowl. They get less movement in the air and off the pitch. Chastening stuff.

  17. Ind 26-1published at 6 overs

Now it's Karun Nair on the drive, sending Jofra Archer's full first delivery through the covers and beating Brydon Carse to the ropes.

Carse then swoops down on the following delivery and under-arms as KL Rahul runs from the non-striker's end, with the opener home safely enough.

Having survived that, Rahul takes advantage of another full delivery and drives another delivery for an off side boundary.

Archer gestures to put a fielder out there, but the field isn't set for full bowling - justifiably so when you saw the lift Bumrah was getting back of a length from this end.

Jofra Archer has dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal twice in this game, both times in his first over of the innings. This is the first time Archer has taken a wicket in his first over in both innings of the same match.

When you are chasing this target, as a bowling unit you know you've got to take everything and produce magic and take some one-handers because you don't have much to play with.

  20. Ind 17-1published at 5 overs

    Target 193

And to rub salt into the wound, Rahul then hits Woakes for consecutive fours.

Both come through the covers, the second one absolutely nailing a wide-ish delivery with a textbook drive.
