Washington is the most vanilla offie ever. Use your feet and bop him over his head!

    It's all very nervy.

When does Ben Stokes go through the gears? Not yet?

He has to trust Woakes for now.

Bit of a grubber, didn't really bounce, it's just the line and the length. Smith as gone back to a fullish ball and it's gone past the outside edge and clipped the off stump. Lovely sort of arm ball or a dirfter and he's done him for length there as well. That really has opened the game wide open.

India are right on top now!

Off-spinner Washington Sundar has beaten Jamie Smith on the outside edge to knock back off stump. It hasn't turned. It has just skidded on. Off stump is knocked back and Lord's is alive to the sound of India's fans.

It has been 11.3 overs since a boundary off the bat. That is the only one in the past 19 overs. There have only been two fours since lunch.

  12. Eng 159-5published at 45 overs

    Stokes 23, Smith 5

Ben Stokes gets bat, pads, body and everything else behind a defensive stroke that looks rock solid. Stokes knows, despite his struggle for runs recently, his team needs him here.

  13. Eng 158-5published at 44 overs

As ever, the fall of a wicket seems to bring an increase in threat from the other end too as Ravindra Jadeja gets a couple to rag out of the rough.

That was a bit of miscalculation from Joe Root. I think he got his bearing slightly wrong. Just when you felt a partnership was taking the game away, a wicket falls and its even Stevens again.

Errm. I'm going to have to take the hit here.

The commentator's curse has struck as Joe Root misses one of his favourite shots - the sweep.

He stepped across to Washington Sundar and after missing is bowled around his legs. He's furious. The game swings again.

When you are batting in such moments, you are absolutely aware of the tense nature of the game. You know the situation, you are valuing a partnership. I'd say at the minute, England are edging ahead but India can grab that back by taking a couple of wickets. Root and Stokes know they need to bat for another hour.

  20. Eng 149-4published at 41 overs

There's not a lot of real bite and turn for either spinner but Jadeja and Sundar have slowed England's scoring.
