  2. 'We threw everything at the West Indies'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 19 July

England assistant coach Paul Collingwood: "It was a very hard-fought day. The West Indies put a decent partnership together, it was hard toil at times. This wicket looks a really good cricket wicket, when it's swinging it's got good carry. But you can score runs with a quick outfield.

"Shoaib Bashir for a young off-spinner did really well to get a couple of wickets in the first session. But because there wasn't much movement on the ball we had to go to other plans, to the bouncer plan and they played that really well. We had some great spells from Mark Wood, for him to walk off wicketless is the biggest surprise of the day.

"Mark Wood's smiling. I think it's his first experience of cramp. We all know what he gives, it's 100% effort. It's proper Test cricket, two teams fighting hard. We thought sometimes we should have more reward, but that's the way Test cricket can go.

"Yesterday the wicket was slightly different, it had a bit more moisture, a bit more kick. It changed colour after this morning's heavy roller, it does have good carry which we managed to get with the second ball. We threw everything at the West Indies today, but sometimes they have the answers.

"I think at times when the wicket wasn't doing anything Jimmy was happy to be sitting in the dressing room. He's been great to have around, his thought processes and tactics he's passing onto the boys. We've got some great young bowlers coming through.

"Holder at the back end there was gritting out, there was some exceptional bowling and he found a way to get through it."

You felt almost embarrassed by their performance at Lord's, all the comments: 'they're a shadow of what they used to be', 'they're not deserving of playing Test cricket', 'they can't compete'.

Today has certainly put the West Indies in a better position.

From all that has gone on through this series, they could've come out and kept that negative reign but they've come out and proved themselves.

England will feel a touch unfortunate not to have taken at least one more wicket as they really ramped up the pressure on Jason Holder.

The former Windies skipper played and missed several times but he survived and will continue alongside Josh Da Silva tomorrow morning...

England did eventually break the Athanaze-Hodge partnership.

Ben Stokes it was with the wicket and Chris Woakes then trapped Kavem Hodge lbw for 120.

  7. 'We want to keep grinding on'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 19 July

West Indies centurion Kavem Hodge, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "It's been an amazing day. You always want to contribute, it was really good for the guys coming off Lord's, coming back as a batting unit it's always sweeter from behind.

"Sticking to our plans, constantly being positive, staying in the moment. We saw it was a good batting wicket, so it was about digging in."

On facing England's pace bowling: "It was really brutal. It's not every day you rock up and face someone bowling 93mph every ball. We had to flinch, some guys got hit but it's part of Test cricket. I made my debut in Australia, it's something I have to embrace and keep moving forward."

On a congratulatory tweet from the Dominican Prime Minister: "It's a nice message from the Prime Minister. It's nice to not only represent the West Indies, but your country. There's not a lot of players from Dominica, it's really nice to follow in that vein."

On his side's prospects: "I think we're in a good position, I think we want to keep grinding on, take it as deep as possible."

Mark Wood should have had Kavem Hodge after lunch for 16 but Joe Root dropped the catch at first slip...

...and the Dominican made England pay with a superb maiden Test century.

Three wickets before lunch on a flat surface did lead to concerns that West Indies' batting line-up might crumble again.

Shoaib Bashir took two wickets with Gus Atkinson getting the other...

We all left Lord's dejected, there was no real competition between the two sides, we felt that the Windies with their inexperience couldn't cope with this England attack but what we found today is that they had much better mindsets.

    We have a Test match.

It's pleasantly surprising to see the level of commitment from the Windies, you saw their confidence growing as the game went on.

We saw at Lord's they were stroking with fear, here they are ready to put the pressure back onto the bowlers.

No Jimmy Anderson but my one correct prediction for the year has (sort of) come in as England do indeed put up a coach to speak at the end of the day.

It's the turn of assistant coach Paul Collingwood to answer the questions from the media today.

Which situation is that, Ed? Seems pretty evenly balanced to me...

After one-way traffic at Lord's, we've got a proper game on our hands at Trent Bridge.

'Bazball' huh? So England score 400+ in a day but are all out. The West Indies score 350 in a day and have 5 wickets remaining. I know which situation I'd rather be in. Any decent side know takes this advantage into day 3 and builds a lead of 150+ runs.

A frustrating day for England. Conditions were perfect for batting so they will have known wickets wouldn't come easy.

They took three wickets before lunch but reality hit in the afternoon as Kavem Hodge and Alick Athanaze put on 175 for the Windies' fourth wicket.

Despite the best efforts of the seamers and Shoaib Bashir, who got his first bowl of the series and took a couple of wickets, England still have a fight on their hands if they are to earn a first-innings lead.

The end of a really good day for the West Indies after the nightmare at Lord's.

They've responded well, the day highlighted by a maiden century from Kavem Hodge.

Josh Da Silva hammers a pull shot for four then watches a delivery well wide of off go through to Jamie Smith - that's it for day two.

An excellent day for the West Indies. Even more impressive after giving away three wickets in the morning session.

Perfectly placed, straight over the bowlers head, well done Jason Holder.

    There's the glass half full...

Big miscue from Jason Holder as he is rushed slightly by the harder new ball.

He tried to muscle it over mid-on but it just looped back over Gus Atkinson's head and landed safely.

Holder jogs through for a single and takes off his gloves. Over to you, Josh Da Silva...
