Summary

  1. Postpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 19 July

England will still feel they just about have the edge, leading by 204 runs, but West Indies have given themselves every chance of parity on first-innings - possibly even a lead.

To see how it plays out at the start of the evening session, it's over to Mike Peter.

West Indies will be very happy, it does feel that we have a game on our hands.

  3. Tea - WI 212-3published at 52 overs

    Trail by 204

Ben Stokes strays onto the pads and Kavem Hodge glances it away fine for four.

Big appeal to end the over. Well, it was but Stokes seems to realise in mid-air having jumped up to appeal that it was too high.

Not out, and that's tea. A very good session for the West Indies. They've added 123 runs without losing a wicket.

  4. Postpublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 19 July

That six won't be in there quite yet but Alick Athanaze played plenty of other classy shots on his way to a maiden Test fifty...

  5. 6 runs

    WI 208-3published at 51 overs

Shoaib Bashir is back on and, after having a look for a couple of balls, Alick Athanaze goes big with a slog-sweep.

A clean swing of the bat and the ball goes high over mid-wicket, just over the rope for the first six of the innings.

West Indies have batted superbly well, if you said that this would be the score at tea break it would've raised eyebrows.

  7. 200 runs

    WI 201-3published at 50 overs

    Trail by 215

No short stuff from Ben Stokes, it's a far more conventional field for the England skipper.

That means there is a full ball that Alick Athanaze is able to drive through mid-off for three to bring up West Indies' 200.

Probably a bit later than we thought but the captain will bowl.

  9. WI 196-3published at 49 overs

Conditions could hardly be better for batting and West Indies are taking full advantage at Trent Bridge.

The partnership for the fourth wicket is now 112 and the tourists have yet to lose a wicket in this session.

With just over 10 minutes until tea, Ben Stokes is coming on to bowl for the first time in the day.

50 for Hodgepublished at 48.4 overs

    WI 195-3

Super shot from Kavem Hodge, picking up the length from Gus Atkinson quickly and smashing the ball through square leg for four more.

Four more - and that's fifty for Hodge!

This one is guided down to deep third to bring up an 85-ball half-century. His second in Test cricket.

This is where you miss Anderson. 46 overs and only three maidens. Pace is great but maidens build the pressure....

I think we thought the ball would've done a little bit more today.

  15. WI 185-3published at 48 overs

Alick Athanaze continues on his merry way, guiding the ball past gully for four, but Kavem Hodge is looking that much more uncomfortable in this over.

The last delivery from Mark Wood is very straight and Hodge turns it to leg, just wide of Ollie Pope at short leg.

He's gone for it, got a top edge, you thought that would've flown away but it lands 10 feet away from a fielder.

Mark Wood is making things happen again.

He starts the over with a full, very fast yorker from round the wicket that hits Kavem Hodge full on the toe. Ouch.

Big appeal but it hit him just outside leg. It has momentarily affected Hodge, though, as he goes after a short ball next up and miscues it.

Somehow, though, even with Wood bowling in excess of 90mph, the top-edge doesn't carry to fine leg.

I'm actually delighted that the West Indies are putting up such a good fight. It's good for Test cricket for the West Indies to have a competitive team. A long way to go, of course, but this is great experience for them. It shows them that hard work and application works even against good teams. On the other hand it's also good for the England attack without Anderson to get some experience of trying to break up a partnership without leaking too many runs.

50 for Athanazepublished at 47 overs

    WI 178-3

Alick Athanaze whips the ball leg side for two - and that's a maiden Test half-century for the West Indies batter.

He has played very nicely so far in this innings, making the most of good batting conditions, and showing off a fine array of shots.

His fifty comes up from 67 balls with nine boundaries.

Is Joe Root not just returning the favour to the West Indies for their generosity in the field to Ollie Pope? I'm assuming it's all part of the plan.
