Nice way to start, a four first ball.

  2. WI 309-5published at 75 overs

Top shot to get off the mark first ball!

Josh Da Silva drives a full ball through the vacant mid-off region and it runs away to hit the boundary cushion.

A successful over for Chris Woakes, though. Can England snaffle another one or two before the close?

Hodge's innings of his life is over, helmet off and the crowd rise up, appreciating his efforts.

He's played tremendously and given the West Indies hope.

    Hodge lbw b Woakes 120 (WI 305-5)

Umpire's call and Kavem Hodge has to go. The end of a wonderful knock.

It was a pretty hefty umpire's call, to the extent that the bowling side would have been very disappointed not to get the wicket had the original decision been not out.

Hodge was trapped on the crease by Chris Woakes, the ball struck just above the knee-roll but the Dominican is not a tall man and the ball was hitting the top of middle and leg.

There's a great ovation from the Trent Bridge crowd as Hodge walks off.

  5. West Indies reviewpublished at 74.4 overs

Has Chris Woakes made the breakthrough?

He raps Kavem Hodge on the pad and the umpire's finger goes up.

Height is the only possible issue...

With this England side you'd expect a bit more, yesterday the West Indies had trouble in the field but still caught England out.

Today they've come out and given it their all.

Mark Wood's given everything today, it's remarkable that he doesn't have any wickets.

  8. WI 303-4published at 74 overs

    Trail by 113

There is an appeal from the slips as a bouncer from Mark Wood whistles past Kavem Hodge, close to the gloves.

England opt against a review and replays show that was wise. Clear daylight between bat/gloves and ball.

Still England search for a breakthrough.

What's impressive about Hodge, every chance he's had to attack, he's really committed to the stroke.

  10. 300 runs

    WI 302-4published at 73.4 overs

Carved down to deep third for four by Kavem Hodge and that brings up the 300 for West Indies.

A first-innings lead now looks very possible for the tourists.

Harsh to say Chris Woakes offers nothing when he was named player of the series in the Ashes last year, Anon.

But I agree, if the Jimmy Anderson decision was all about preparing for the Ashes, it feels a little odd given it is unlikely Woakes will go after he was left out for the tour of India over the winter.

Why is Jimmy retiring yet we persist with Woakes. Offers next to nothing. Surely he's not going to the Ashes next year? If not why is he playing?

I don't think Chris Woakes will be happy with this appearance. He's usually reliable but he feels short of a gallop. He's just started to find some swing here.

  14. WI 298-4published at 73 overs

England have now managed to get the ball swinging late in the day but, so far, West Indies are managing to keep them at bay.

It does feel like one may bring two, three, four...

After a couple of maidens, three come from Chris Woakes' latest.

The crowd are getting right behind Mark Wood.

  16. WI 295-4published at 72 overs

Mark Wood is doing his best to try and spare Jimmy any further interviews after last week.

He finds Jason Holder's edge first ball of the over but it falls well short of slip and then beats the bat three times in a row after that.

Make that four! Another beauty from Wood and the crowd are up, egged on by Ben Stokes. England are pushing for a breakthrough.

    Thanks, Mike.

How keen is everyone to hear from Jimmy Anderson? It feels like the kind of day where England would usually put up the bowling coach/mentor to speak to the media...

Turns out maidens are like buses - you wait ages for one, then two appear.

Woakes raps Hodge on the pads, but the ball is heading down leg and England don't send the appeal upstairs.

Right, here's Sam Drury to take you through to the close.

If there's one thing that can be said of Jason Holder, it's that he's taken on a lot more than others.

He was handed the captaincy at 23 when he hadn't even established himself and he's come out of the other end with flying colours.

  20. WI 295-4published at 70 overs

Mark Wood's back after a brief break.

He sends down a maiden - England's first since the 26th over - to Jason Holder.

The former West Indies captain has nine runs from 33 balls.
