    96mph, we're in for a game here.

The crowd, that has been very quiet, finally makes some noise.

  2. WI 36-0published at 10 overs

Here comes Mark Wood in place of Gus Atkinson, and he immediately rouses the crowd with a burst of mid-90s pace.

The first ball draws an edge from Louis, squirting towards point for two.

The next ball flies wide of off and is left well alone by Louis, but the 96mph on the speed gun cheers the spectators mightily.

    Serious pace does that.

Everything's perfect except the fact that it's at Trent Bridge.

I never scored a run here.

  4. WI 32-0published at 9 overs

All through the off side today, Brathwaite adding another four with a well-judged shot to the long-off ropes from the bowling of Woakes.

A lovely sunny Friday ‘working’ in my home office, window open & a cool soft drink with TV pictures and TMS. Perfect. Good start West Indies, make this a see-saw 5 day contest.

  7. WI 25-0published at 8 overs

Mikyle Louis had three from 17 balls going into Gus Atkinson's fourth over, and may have feared getting bogged down.

He relieves some of the pressure by timing Atkinson's first ball to the long on boundary for four.

Nice start here form the West Indies, they would've been concerned after that Lord's showing and would've been slightly jittery in the locker room.

One day someone will do a thesis on if tapping the pitch after a let makes any difference.

    I suspect not.

  10. WI 20-0published at 7 overs

And there's another four for Brathwaite, driving away through the covers after a Woakes delivery sat up to be hit.

The one scoring shot of the over.

Gus Atkinson in his first two Test innings has as many five-fers in England as Andrew Flintoff took in his 72 home Test inns.

Really well put away from Brathwaite, it came up short and he just hammered it.

  13. WI 16-0published at 6 overs

Brathwaite has looked a little more confident than his opening partner thus far, he picks up another four by whipping Atkinson's delivery past Ben Stokes at point.

They're playing very carefully at the moment.

  15. WI 11-0published at 5 overs

Just a single from the over, as Brathwaite nudges Woakes into the covers.

I think I can pretty definitively say I know more about cricket than I do about gymnastics, Buster.

That said, our headteacher Mrs Ward ran gymnastics classes when I was in primary school, I think I got up to badge four - I had it sewn onto my shorts.

I not sure that involved any flick flacks or Arab springs, but I imagine there was a solid forward roll involved.

Perhaps I am a loss to the gymnastics - Max Whitlock may owe his career to me.

I hope Mike Peter knows more about cricket than gymnastics. When Sinclair dismissed Brook he did not perform a somersault, but a Flick Flack (or Arab Spring) which enables the gymnast to start by facing forward, but twist in the movement to enable the back somersault. I am not CERTAIN how great it is for the neighbouring strip, but it was entertaining!!

  17. How's stat?!published at 11:18 British Summer Time 19 July

    Andy Zaltzman
    Statistician on Test Match Special

Gus Atkinson took 12-106 on his debut which is the second-best figures on Test debut for England.

It was also the best since 1890 where Fred 'Nutty' Martin took 12-102 against Australia at The Oval.

  18. WI 10-0published at 4 overs

A first maiden of the day, Gus Atkinson sending down six scoreless deliveries to Mikyle Louis.

  19. WI 10-0published at 3 overs

Brathwaite picks up two into mid-wicket, working Woakes into the leg side.

It looks to be a great day for batting at Trent Bridge, these openers will want to set a platform.
