Summary

  1. WI 102-3published at 31 overs

    Trail by 314

Shoaib Bashir finally persuades Kavem Hodge to push forward on the front foot to end another tidy over.

The right-hander continues to play back and look comfortable doing so. But that approach does give the bowler some encouragement because he only has to slightly misjudge one and it's a plumb lbw.

  2. 100 runs

    WI 101-3published at 30 overs

The 100 comes up for West Indies as Kavem Hodge works Chris Woakes to leg for two.

There is a bit of shape away from the right-hander for Woakes, nothing extravagant but more than anything we saw with the new ball.

Hodge is happy to leave outside off, though, as sees out the rest of the over.

  3. WI 99-3published at 29 overs

Kavem Hodge is determined to play Shoaib Bashir off the back-foot and does so effectively enough throughout the over.

After five dot balls, he flicks the last behind square on the leg side for a single.

Let’s not forget that this team beat Australia in Australia not long ago before we start bashing them too hard… maybe England are just tougher opponents?

  5. WI 98-3published at 28 overs

Edged... but it falls short of Joe Root at first slip.

That comes a ball after Alick Athanaze played a gorgeous back-foot punch through extra cover for four.

Four more to end the over, this time off the front foot. A picture-perfect cover drive from Athanaze.

That's Chris Woakes at his best, drawing the batter forward and driving it though nicely, the wobbler.

  7. WI 90-3published at 27.1 overs

    Trail by 326

Chris Woakes starts from the Stuart Broad End and it's a super delivery first up, a bit of shape and then nip away off the seam to beat Alick Athanaze.

    Wobble-seam delivery.

  8. WI 90-3published at 27 overs

    Trail by 326

Tidy start from Shoaib Bashir, who must be feeling good about himself having taken two wickets before lunch, especially after not bowling a ball at Lord's.

Alick Athanaze gets the first run of the session for West Indies with a single into the off side.

Anyway, they are back under way at Trent Bridge with Shoaib Bashir bowling the first over of the afternoon session.

We're a long way from that becoming something England have to consider, Ian.

It would be interesting to see how Ben Stokes saw it but given how hot it is in Nottingham today, the bowlers might prefer a bit of a rest and trust that, with another three days left in the match, there will be enough time to bowl West Indies out again anyway.

If England get WI out for less than 216 surely should enforce follow on, given vagaries of weather forecast beyond Saturday?

And Shoaib Bashir got his second in the penultimate over of the session, although Kirk McKenzie played a huge part in his own downfall with an, um, misguided shot selection...

After his dream debut at Lord's last week, Gus Atkinson was in the wickets again.

He bounced out Windies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite for 48 as lunch approached...

Anyway, as quickly as Mark Wood bowled - and it was rapid - he didn't actually take any wickets.

It was the spin of Shoaib Bashir that gave England the breakthrough when Mikyle Louis holed out for 21 to end a 53-run opening stand for the West Indies.

Just to add, Mark Wood's fastest over for England in Test cricket came in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG in the 2021-22 Ashes.

His average speed in that over was 96.34mph. His quickest delivery - 97.72mph - came the over before that.

Right, let's dig a little deeper into the numbers from that Mark Wood spell.

According to the CricViz data, Wood has bowled the 11 fastest overs by an England bowler in a home Test, the next quickest is a Jofra Archer over at Lord's in the 2019 Ashes during that famous spell against Steve Smith.

Meanwhile, of the three overs faster than Wood's second one today, two were bowled by Brett Lee during the 2005 Ashes. The quickest was at Old Trafford, where his average speed was 96.35mph. Wowzers.

An over at The Oval later in that series was clocked at 95.07mph.

Third on that list? Sri Lanka's Dilhara Fernando at Lord's in 2011 at an average of 94.64 mph.

By comparison, Wood was at a mere 94.46mph.

I mentioned that the batters rarely looked troubled in that morning session... there was an exception.

Mark Wood bowled an incredibly rapid four-over spell that had the Windies batters appearing rather less comfortable.

The 34-year-old's first two overs were the fastest bowled by an England bowler on home soil and the fastest bowled by anyone in England since 2011...

I feel that the Windies really needed Brathwaite to go long and big if they were going to stand a chance here looking at how inexperienced the rest of their batting lineup is.

    Thanks, Mike.

A morning session in which West Indies' batters rarely looked troubled and yet they contrived to lose three wickets.

Much like England yesterday, wickets have been more gifted than earned. The difference is that the rate Ben Stokes' side score at, they often have far more runs on the board by the time those lapses occur.

Still, the bowlers have stuck to their task in sweltering conditions to put England in a very strong position.
