These West Indies batters wouldn't have faced pace like this before.

It might not be 97mph (yet) but the introduction of Mark Wood has certainly livened things up!

Kavem Hodge tries to hook the second ball, miscues it but the ball lands safely behind square on the leg side.

Four next ball as Alick Athanaze drives, in the air with no foot movement, but into the gap at cover.

Another attempted pull nearly ends badly for the batter but this time the ball goes just over the ducking Ollie Pope at short leg.

Athanaze is going to keep attacking though and whips, again aerially, through mid-wicket for four more. That brings up the fifty partnership.

  3. WI 128-3published at 39.1 overs

Boos from the crowd as Mark Wood's first ball, full and defended by Kavem Hodge, comes up on the screen at a rather pedestrian 89.6mph.

  4. WI 128-3published at 39 overs

He was close on the wicket ball of Kirk McKenzie and this time Shoaib Bashir is called for a no-ball.

Just three from the over but loud cheers at the end of it...

That's because Mark Wood is preparing to come on at the other end. Strap in, folks!

This game has been the fourth slowest of Woakes' career in terms of average speed.

Hodge has been a bit quiet, he needed that one.

  7. WI 125-3published at 38 overs

    Athanaze 30, Hodge 12

Kavem Hodge has been extremely careful so far in this innings but when Chris Woakes sends down a floaty one, well wide of off, the right-hander throws his hands at it.

He stretches to reach it and is rewarded with his first boundary of the innings through point.

After six overs in the spell, that might be it from Woakes for a little while.

Nice bit of bowling, nice field setting, just a bit of luck there for Athanaze.

  9. WI 121-3published at 37 overs

Shoaib Bashir is through the 14th over of his spell, either side of lunch.

He's bowled well, taken a couple of wickets and been reasonably economical. Just what England will need as Ben Stokes tries to keep his seamers fresh with the sun beating down in Nottingham.

The off-spinner tosses a couple up, nicely flighted, to tempt Alick Athanaze and when he does the same for the third ball in a row, the left-hander takes the bait.

Hit in the air but just wide of the short mid-on fielder for four.

Four more to end the over, far more controlled from Athanaze. Stroked through mid-off.

Let's hope not, Malcolm. All seemed to be fine at Lord's and there has been no suggestion of any injury concern.

Ben Stokes has certainly been moving just fine in the field so, at this stage, I can only assume that it's a tactical decision from the skipper.

West Indies remain on Nelson until a single from Kavem Hodge to end the Chris Woakes over.

The fact that we are now in the afternoon session and no sign of the skipper bowling do we think that he has a fitness issue?

  12. WI 111-3published at 35 overs

Shoaib Bashir races through another over for the cost of just a single.

With this West Indies pair looking pretty content at the crease, might it be time for another burst from Mark Wood soon?

Athanaze has been playing well, the ball hasn't been moving around but he gets himself into strong positions.

Didn't time it as well as he wanted to but he still gets it to the boundary.

  15. WI 110-3published at 34 overs

The steady start to the afternoon continues with Alick Athanaze driving Chris Woakes through the covers for four.

He didn't get all of it but it is a fast outfield at Trent Bridge and the fielder soon had to give up the chase.

West Indies will be happy with how the first half hour of this session has gone.

  16. WI 106-3published at 33 overs

Good probing over from Shoaib Bashir but it's the worst ball of it that draws the greatest reaction from the crowd.

A short ball outside off that Kavem Hodge tries to cut but gets an under-edge that bounces up and just over slip.

Some fans at Trent Bridge clearly thought that was a chance.

Meanwhile, we've just seen a replay of the Kirk McKenzie wicket and Bashir really was exceptionally close to over-stepping.

This England team play tricks with your mind. I've got tickets for Days 3 and 4 so every WI wicket leaves me with a mixture of joy and apprehension about how much cricket I'll see

  18. WI 104-3published at 32 overs

    Athanaze 17, Hodge 4

Ooh, hello! A bit of extra bounce and Chris Woakes raps Alick Athanaze on the gloves.

That ball just jumped up from back of a length to surprise the left-hander but he played it pretty well, ensuring it landed safely on the leg side.

    Just two from the over.

Speaking of those really nice shots. These two from Alick Athanaze have been the pick of them so far in this afternoon session...

West Indies have just calmed things down coming in after lunch, some really nice shots.
