Dropped by Harry Brook, it went quickly but it's one of those that you practice all the time.

    That's a proper chance.

    Should have been taken.

KL Rahul takes a very late dab at a short delivery from Tongue, looking to send the ball in a similar direction to where he'd just scored four.

It's a catching practice shot and heads straight to Harry Brook at gully... who puts the ball down having tried to take it above his head.

How costly might that be for England?

KL Rahul has batted well today. The ball has been doing a lot but he's played smartly and left it when needed. He times it well, moves his feet and reads it perfectly.

First ball was another careless swipe from Rishabh Pant. Good ball from Josh Tongue though.

  6. Ind 123-3published at 37.4 overs

Changes at both ends as Chris Woakes comes off and Josh Tongue has his first bowl of the day.

Rishabh Pant takes another elaborate swipe at the first delivery but doesn't make contact, but Rahul adds four by guiding the ball between slips and gully - his first boundary today, and indeed in 57 deliveries.

Bumrah is the best bowler now across multiple formats, however many brilliant bowlers before him. Muralitharan, Walsh, McGrath, Warne, Akram. Maybe judge Bumrah at the end of his career.

We are discussing the "most complete" not the best right? Slightly different things. I was fortunate enough to see Malcom Marshall in 1991 bowling seam at Headingley and super fast at Lord's. He had the complete armoury for all conditions, for Test and ODIs.

Brydon Carse has bowled six overs this morning, he's one for 12 with two maidens. That was one of the fuller spells that he's bowled, three of his nine fullest overs have been this morning.

This was the scene a little while ago at Headingley, but it's blue skies behind the pavilion now.

The pitch has been bathed in sunshine the whole morning, but it's fairly windy and so some clumps of cloud have been blowing through.

The BBC forecast says 0% chance of rain for the duration of the day.

There's a little more for the seamers in this pitch today, the cracks have opened up a bit.

This partnership is crucial for India.

  11. drinks break

    Ind 118-3published at 37 overs

    Lead by 124

First change for England as Ben Stokes replaces Brydon Carse.

India take two runs off his over, a leg bye from the first delivery and a no-ball from an over-step.

The players will take drinks, with this partnership now worth 26.

Re Sam from Birmingham (11:43). What earthly reason is there not to put James Anderson in the same bracket as the great Curtly Ambrose and Glenn McGrath? Except that he's English?

    Anon

RE: Sam, Birmingham. It's a bad take NOT to have Anderson in the same bracket. It's fine to say those two are better, but due to their different strengths and achievements, you can't say the difference is enormous. Jimmy's best innings of 7/42 is close to 8/45 of Ambrose. His SR is also comparable (56.87 vs 54.57 for Curtly and 51.95 for McGrath). But neither of those two could keep up their level for as long. 12 and 14 years for Ambrose and McGrath vs 21 years for Jimmy. Fine to not rate him as highly but it's flat out wrong to not have him in the conversation.

The final Sussex wicket has just gone at Chester-le-Street. That means Jofra Archer will be bowling with a red-ball for the first time in four years imminently.

The clouds have rolled in. The pitch is flat but it won't be easy for Durham's top order.

Plenty quality fast bowlers from the modern era are getting a mention. Let's not overlook Fred Trueman.

C'mon we're at Headingley. The greatest fast bowler has to be Fred!

Rishabh Pant made an entertaining 134 and was dismissed lbw by Josh Tongue at the start of India's late collapse.

KL Rahul is the real key to this batting lineup. He's got the experience, such good technique and a great deal of maturity. You feel as if he's going to have to be the glue to this fairly inexperienced India team.

  20. Ind 114-3published at 35 overs

Nothing too crazy from Rishabh Pant, guiding Carse's delivery to third for a single.

He returns to the strike and Carse beats his edge with a fine delivery.
