I love how tight England have bowled. Brydon Carse has been brilliant from this end.

Bowling has definitely been better this morning, but there are still way too many inconsistent deliveries? Full tosses, short and wide. We do miss that consistency of Jimmy & Broad.

Plenty of movement and carry for the England seamers this morning.

Glen McGrath, Curtly Ambrose, James Anderson streets ahead of Bumrah. Early days for him though to join the pantheon of greats!

    Jim, Cornwall

Definitely Malcolm Marshall, his overseas record was immense, although he had plenty of quality around him. Bumrah does a lot of the work on his own!

    Niki, Oxon

Do not forget Richard Hadlee. 9 for 52 is as good as it gets. His swing and seam could be incomparable. Oh yeah, he could bat too!

    Robin Christchurch, NZ of course.

India haven't really moved anywhere. They've come along 13 with the loss of their captain.

England are certainly keeping it tight, bowling superbly. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant will know that they've got a job on their hands.

Chris Woakes can't believe that he's missed that, good length and great carry. England have been relentless so far.

  7. Ind 103-3published at 30 overs

That's an absolute beauty from Chris Woakes.

It cuts past KL Rahul through to Jamie Smith, and gets a nod of acknowledgement from the experienced batter.

Such beautiful shape and lift, it would have almost been a shame to besmirch its path with an edge or touch on the wicket.

That was KL Rahul's 26th Test fifty.

He averages 40 runs in the first innings and 25 in the second innings. This is his fifth half-century in his 25th second innings.

It's been a good innings so far from KL Rahul, classy player. He's really started to take some responsibility and lead the way following the departure of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Rahul makes half-century as India reach 100

KL Rahul survives a brutish Brydon Carse delivery that flies over his off stump, then brings up his 50 and India's 100 off the following delivery with an inside edge into the leg side.

His half-century comes up off 87 balls, and the India opener goes back to work, fending off the next ball and letting the last go through to Jamie Smith.

If you take Jasprit Bumrah out of the India attack, you're thinking how will they even be able to take 20 wickets? England would be delighted if they didn't have to face him.

One long weekend last year, I made a spreadsheet of bowlers that I update regularly. According to my very scientific analysis, Jason from Chelmsford is right. Jasprit Bumrah is not top five...he's number one.

    Hamid, London

Bumrah for me is the most complete bowler ever. In the best averages ever for Tests, and the best in the hardest era for T20 bowlers. Test bowling is harder for bowlers now too with the balls doing far less. Cricket is constantly thinking the past is best, despite what is the case in every professional sport. This India team destroy any team from pre-2000.

    Jack, Balham

It's a game of opinions and I can only judge the players of my era but Glenn McGrath is the best I've ever seen. Incredible consistency and almost never had a bad game.

There seems to be two ways that Rishabh Pant plays - those really defensive strokes, or it could go anywhere.

It's been a good start from England, taking that dream wicket of Shubman Gill early on.

Rishabh Pant didn't play a single aggressive shot in that over.

And just a single from Chris Woakes' over, with Rishabh Pant denying the England seamer a maiden by pushing the sixth ball to point.

@Petrie_JohnC on X: Woakes, Carse and Tongue have all bowled well in spells. It would not be a surprise however if the first Test in the Ashes saw a completely different seam attack of Wood, Archer and Atkinson (fitness permitting). Decent depth there.

KL Rahul looks slightly nervous at the other end.

Brydon Carse sends down a maiden to KL Rahul, finding impressive lift off a good length.

He's been revved up by that wicket.
