  1. 50 runs

    Lancashire v Hampshire 367-9

Liam Dawson and Mohammad Abbas are frustrating Lancashire no end here.

They have faced four bowlers in 10 overs this morning, adding 37 runs.

It has taken their final wicket stand to 50. Dawson has gone to 82 while Abbas has one.

Top marks for these two. The less said about Lancashire's efforts.

Jordan Clark appears to be warming to the task as he goes four, six off consecutive Farhan Ahmed deliveries.

That brings up the 50 between him and Sai Sudharsan.

It shows how difficult it is to run through this Surrey batting line-up.

  3. Fourth batting point for Yorkshirepublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Yorks 401-5 v Middx

Five overs left before the cut-off for bonus points and, while it looks unlikely Yorkshire will go all out for a fifth batting point, they now have a fourth safely in the bag.

Jonny Bairstow is still there on 122, so you never know... while Middlesex need another wicket quickly if they're going to claim a second bowling point.

They thought that had been secured in Luke Hollman's last over, when George Hill edged low to slip but, after consultation, the umpires agreed that the ball bounced before it was scooped up by Ryan Higgins.

  4. Record for James Rewpublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Somerset 438-7 v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

James Rew has just notched the eighth first-class century of his career - and all before the age of 21!

We are told, by former pub landlord and cricket statistician, Steve Pittard, this is the highest number of centuries in English cricket by a player before the age of 21. He turns 22 in January.

Anyway, he didn't have long to celebrate the milestone because moments later he was out for 103, caught at first slip by Ashton Turner off the bowling of England all-rounder Brydon Carse.

While it looks fairly straightforward for Somerset to score another 12 runs for a fifth bonus point, the idea Durham will take another two wickets on this track and with this ball, seems somewhat fanciful. But you never know!

    Lancashire v Hampshire 352-9

Liam Dawson is doing a terrific job for Hampshire.

He hooks George Balderson for six into the Party Stand at Old Trafford and that brings up the third batting point for his side.

He has now put on 35 with Mohammad Abbas. The no.11 has 1!

  6. Third batting pointpublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Notts v Surrey 351-5

Slow going from Surrey this morning from the leaders but Jordan Clark clubs one through the offside off Farhan Ahmed for the first boundary of the day.

It takes them past 350 and a third batting point. They look more intent on setting up for a big total than chasing the bonus points.

    Warwickshire 231-4 v Kent 156

The inside edge to take him from 94 to 98 is fortunate for Will Rhodes.

But he does not dwell on it as he flicks the next ball from Alfie Ogborne to the short legside boundary.

It is his second century of the season and has come off 151 balls, with 19 fours.

With Rhodes joining Durham in 2025, could this be his final ton for the Bears?

  8. Postpublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Yorks 386-5 v Middx

A watchful start by Yorkshire on this second morning, with their overnight total boosted by 14 in the first five overs.

George Hill has done most of the scoring, advancing to 70 while Jonny Bairstow has added only a couple to his overnight 107.

Hill might have been on his way, though - he was lured down the track by spinner Luke Hollman but Jack Davies, behind the timbers for Middlesex, squandered the stumping chance.

  9. wicket

WICKET Bethell c Finch b Stobo 8published at 11:17 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Warwickshire 219-4 v Kent 156

    Some early joy for Kent.

Nice line and length from Charlie Stobo and Jacob Bethell nicks it behind.

In the week he received his first England white ball call-up, Bethell can't make a red-ball impact.

    Somerset 417-7 v Durham

And, just two balls after reaching his ton, James Rew is on his way!

It wasn't a great shot to bring up his hundred and neither was this one, just guiding a ball outside off stump from Brydon Carse straight into the waiting hands of first slip.

Still, a fine knock overall from the 20-year-old, who is replaced in the middle by Somerset skipper Lewis Gregory.

It's a streaky way to get there, edging Brydon Carse between the wicketkeeper and first slip to the boundary - but the stats will show an eighth first-class hundred for James Rew.

The young left-hander gets there from 112 balls as Somerset continue to accumulate runs this morning.

  12. Postpublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Essex 70-1 v Worcs

A nice start for Tom Westley who hits Tom Taylor for three fours in the over to take his score to 17 off 13 balls.

Robin Das is on 22 at the other end as the Pears seek a second Essex wicket early on day two.

  13. Farhan twirling alreadypublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Notts v Surrey 342-5

After 28 overs yesterday, Farhan Ahmed is busy again today.

Skipper Haseeb Hameed threw him the ball straight away and he has already whizzed through two overs, giving up just two singles so far.

  14. 50 runs

50 for Liam Dawsonpublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Lancashire v Hampshire 336-9

Liam Dawson is trying to shield last man and known rabbit Mohammad Abbas.

He plays out five dots to George Balderson but hits the last ball for four.

That brings up a very good half-century from 74 balls - he really is a fine cricketer for Hampshire.

  15. Postpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Warwickshire 215-3 v Kent 156

Not the first over Kent and Alfie Ogborne would have wanted.

Will Rhodes helps himself to two fours and moves to 90. The ex-Bears captain is very close to his century now.

  16. Fourth batting point for Somersetpublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Somerset 400-6 v Durham

It takes just a single over for Somerset to pocket their fourth bonus point, with James Rew and Kasey Aldridge picking up five singles from Callum Parkinson.

They've got another 13 overs to try and add 50 more - which would mean another batting point. Durham need three wickets in that time if they're to secure a third bonus point for their efforts with the ball.

    Essex 50-1 v Worcs 266

Essex fast bowler Jamie Porter blitzed a hole in the Worcestershire top order to return his second County Championship five-wicket haul of the season before the Pears rallied well on day one.

After Worcestershire had elected to bat, Porter and Sam Cook shared four wickets in the space of 13 balls as Essex reduced Worcestershire to 10-4 inside five overs.

But, as the Kookaburra ball lost its initial hardness, Pears captain Brett D’Oliveira sparked the Worcestershire recovery, with significant contributions coming from Ethan Brookes, Tom Taylor and on-loan Surrey spinner Amar Virdi.

Porter, the joint leading wicket-taker in Division One, finished with 5-52 from 17 overs as the Pears were finally bowled out for 266.

In reply, Essex knocked off 50 of the deficit before losing former South Africa Test opener Dean Elgar lbw to Taylor for 29 to the last ball before the close.

The hosts will have Jordan Cox available to bat on Friday after he was released by England once the team had been confirmed following the toss at Lord’s.

  19. Kent don't need snookers... yetpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Warwickshire 207-3 v Kent 156

It never rains but it pours.

Kent have lost five games in a row and began the week 35 points adrift of safety.

But after day one at Edgbaston, they are already in big trouble, trailing by 51 runs after being bundled out in less than 40 overs.

Will Rhodes resumes on 82 and with Jacob Bethell for company and Ed Barnard to come, it could be more hard labour in store.

But every Championship day is a new one. Maybe this will be the start of the Kent great escape.

  20. Lancs' batting must firepublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 30 August 2024

    Lancashire v Hampshire 330-9

For two-thirds of the opening day at Old Trafford, Keaton Jennings' decision to bowl was open to question.

At 249-3, with Fletcha Middleton on 109, Hampshire were going along rather serenely.

But five wickets with the new ball dragged Lancashire towards parity.

There is still one wicket to winkle out this morning, but the challenge will be on the home side's batters to show that 330-9 is slightly below par.

The batting unit has been flaky at times this season, they cannot afford another such effort here.
