At 308-2 yesterday with Rory Burns cruising on 161, Surrey were looking at a score of 500-plus.

Step forward Farhan Ahmed, the 16-year-old off-spinner on his Notts first-class debut.

He took three wickets in two overs, including two in two balls - Burns, Ben Foakes and Will Jacks no less - as Surrey slipped to 311-5 and finished the day with 4-69 from a mammoth stint of 28 overs.

It was desperately needed by Notts, but the champions bat deep and the home side have a lot more work to do this morning before they can start clawing back any deficit.

But can Ahmed, the younger brother of Leicestershire and England leg-spinner Rehan, claim that wicket for a maiden five-fer?

  3. Can Somerset's Rew accrue a few more against Durham?published at 10:53 British Summer Time 30 August

    Somerset 395-6 v Durham

With Somerset confirming the signing of Kiwi seamer Brett Randell for their three remaining games, there’s plenty of incentive for the bowling attack to prove their worth when Durham bat at some point today.

That scenario might still be some way off, with James Rew eyeing his second Championship century of the summer and Somerset, resuming at 395-6, in line to collect maximum batting bonus points.

Durham toiled manfully in the field on day one, with rookie paceman Daniel Hogg and spinner Callum Parkinson taking two wickets apiece.

But they were largely unable to stem the flow of runs as Tom Abell and Tom Banton shared a 185 partnership before Rew - who returns to the crease on 89 - built on that platform later in the day.

  4. Bairstow's unbeaten ton puts Tykes in command against Middlesexpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 30 August

    Yorks 372-5 v Middx

Renowned as a man who’s at his most dangerous after being written off, Jonny Bairstow certainly batted as though he had a point to prove to give Yorkshire the upper hand on the opening day of their promotion clash against Middlesex.

Bairstow, left out of the England set-up this summer, struck a bristling unbeaten 107 at Headingley to steer the home side – who will climb into the promotion places if they win – to 372-5.

Middlesex looked very much in contention after reducing their hosts to 242-5, with leg-spinner Luke Hollman claiming three of those wickets, but Bairstow and George Hill, who resumes on 58 not out, have tilted the contest back in the Tykes’ favour.

With just a three-point gap separating them from second-placed Middlesex in the table, Yorkshire could even wipe that out in this first innings if Bairstow and Hill can stretch their total to 450 in the first 14 overs of the day.

It's day two of the latest round of Championship matches and if it's anything like yesterday, we should be in for a treat.

We had centuries for big dogs like Jonny Bairstow and Rory Burns and a breakthrough debut for 16-year-old off-spinner Farhan Ahmed.

Then to cap it all, there was the abandonment of the match between Gloucestershire and Northants over the stage of the Bristol pitch after two batters had been hit on the hand and forced to retire hurt.

It's a lot to live up to, but we'll follow the stories wherever they are.
