Summary

  1. Ind 94-1published at 31 overs

Sai Sudharsan walks in a three.

It's the second Test of the 23-year-old's career, he was dropped after making 0 and 30 in the first Test at Headingley.

He spends his first over at the non-striker's end as Yashavi Jaiswal faces all of Brydon Carse's over without scoring.

He hops backwards evading a delivery down the leg side and is struck on the top of the pads with both feet off the ground.

Well deserved for Chris Woakes. We talked about the length, it was a perfect delivery. KL Rahul didn't know whether to go forwards or backwards. Thick inside edge and it's gone hip height straight to Zac Crawley. Great bowling, he deserves that. He's stuck at it all morning and it's paid off.

    Rahul c Crawley b Woakes 46 (Ind 94-1)

    There's the breakthrough!

England have their first wicket after putting their opponents into bat, and it's Chris Woakes who has found the edge.

KL Rahul had a bit of a waft at a wide-ish ball earlier in the over, this delivery is tighter on him and the opener pushes at it a little, sending the edge to Zak Crawley at third slip.

Not a great delivery from Brydon Carse. Really short, really wide, Yashasvi Jaiswal had all the time in the world to set up.

  8. Ind 92-0published at 29 overs

Short and wide delivery from Brydon Carse and KL Rahul launches himself at it in the same way I'd go at the spread Sahil just captured.

Off the back foot, powered through the covers for four.

I think there's going to be a few hundreds scored on this pitch. It looks a goodie.

Chris Woakes also switches end, running in with the media centre at his back.

KL Rahul turns his second delivery through square for two.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was very watchful in that first session. I think now he's going to look at playing a few more. He's set his stall up, he doesn't want to play a rash shot and get out. Both of them look good out there.

  13. Ind 84-0published at 27 overs

A late call on a front-foot no ball from the final ball of Carse's over requires England to reset.

The England seamer has a second go at his sixth ball, and Yashasvi Jaiswal tucks him away for four with a confident cut through backward point.

Jofra Archer dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal cheaply in both innings at Lord's, setting today up as an intriguing tussle between the pair.

Archer only got five deliveries at Jaiswal in his opening spell, however, and all five were left alone by the left-hander.

When Archer returned 20 minutes before lunch, Jaiswal played at all three of his first three deliveries from the England quick.

Archer beat the edge with his ninth ball to Jaiswal - almost a carbon copy of his first-innings dismissal last week - and was then ramped for four a delivery later. Only Jaiswal will know if he truly meant that one.

It has been an intriguing head-to-head amid the bigger picture.

In the last six Test matches, the first session of day one at Old Trafford has been the toughest to bat during the first two days, with an average of just 23. Today, India have done well to get through the session without losing a wicket and are probably starting to edge ahead of England here.
