Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul have set up a good platform. I still think there's something in this surface for the bowlers so they'll have to be careful.

What a comfortable session that was for India. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul can be happy with their work going into lunch.

  3. India 78-0 at lunchpublished at 26 overs

England have just not had the breaks, having bowled pretty well. India's openers have just about got the balance right.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is 36 not out off 74 balls while KL Rahul is unbeaten on 40 off 82 deliveries.

This has been a really good start for India. The pitch looks really good to bat on but it is overcast conditions so they've done well.

It's all a bit quiet for England's liking at Old Trafford.

No Liam Dawson with two minutes to go until the interval. Jofra Archer continues.

Wow! That had some flair to it.

    Ind 76-0published at 25 overs

Ben Stokes, collar turned up, bangs it in short and wide to Yashasvi Jaiswal with the penultimate ball of the over.

The left-handed Jaiswal reacts by aggressively flashing a cut on his heels and the ball flies over the boundary for six at deep third. Brilliant batting!

Will we get one over of Liam Dawson before lunch?

That's a very good delivery from Jofra Archer. How did Yashasvi Jaiswal manage to play that shot, falling on his back. That was almost matrix style.

  11. Ind 68-0published at 24 overs

Jofra Archer purses his lips, then breaks into a big smile, after a beauty of a delivery to Yashasvi Jaiswal which whistles past his defensive shot.

Archer follows it up with a brute of a short ball to Jaiswal who, incredibly, arches his back and quite deliberately guides it over the slip cordon for four off the face. The India opener ends up on his back side but he watched that all the way on to the bat.

Archer can only chuckle in disbelief.

The organisation at Old Trafford needs a radical overhaul. The queues were bonkers, they know the vast majority of people want to bring bags, so they need to put more people on the gates checking.

Was lucky enough to get tickets to Old Trafford to an Ashes Test last time around. By far and away the worst organised cricket ground in the country. From getting in, to bars, to toilets (especially in the “temporary” stand). Even more disappointing for all those there today that it remains the same by the sounds of it.

Me and a friend arrived at 10:50, and got into the stand at the start of the second over. My dad arrived at 10:25 and arrived at the start of the 5th. Maybe I have a trusting face and the security team just let me in.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has had a different kind of approach this innings. He's not played many big shots, it just seems like he's happy to defend. Maybe he just wants to see through this session.

  15. Ind 63-0published at 23 overs

Yashasvi Jaiswal looking organised and determined as the clock ticks towards luncheon. He's putting in the hard yards here in the hope to make hay later on this afternoon.

Ben Stokes is round the wicket to the lefty but he's a little too straight and Jaiswal is able to get body right behind it and show him the maker's name.

Offered a wide one at the end of the over by Stokes and Jaiswal waspishly cuts between gully and point for four.

Stokes shakes his head before collecting his cap from the umpire.

India fans Yosh and Jaimen, wearing India shirts while standing outside Old Trafford

Always a buzz on the first day, right? And India has seen plenty of support for all matches.

BBC Newsbeat caught up with Yosh and Jaimen outside Old Trafford.

“It’s been a good competition,” Jaimen says despite his team being 2-1 down in the series.

It’s Yosh’s first time watching his nation play in the UK.

“They have done very well because there were a lot of questions when the selection was done. They were majorly missing the main two players – Virat (Kohli) and Rohit (Sharma),” he says, “but they have shown good competition and skills.”

When it comes to the beef we’re seeing between England and India: “That’s what excited me the most about the last match,” Jaimen says.

He reckons Shubman Gill’s comments on England are unfair: “England, you’re playing for your nation. You want to win”

Yosh agrees and thinks the aggression is “very exciting” and that it “keeps test cricket alive”.

“We also play cricket here. The head of the moment it’s always the thing that comes up. There are two sides from both teams. It can be said from the both sides.”

Jofra Archer is back. England look a bit flat. Even the Barmy Army trumpter's rendition of the Great Escape is only half-heartedly sung by the Old Trafford crowd.

This is good old-fashioned opening batting from Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, who are diligently seeing it off.

On this surface, every time the ball has hit back of length, it's carried through. Every time it's pitched fuller, it doesn't.

I'm interested to see how this pitch is going to play over the next couple of days. There's cracks already
