Summary

Ben Stokes into his third over and he beats the bat on a couple of occasions as KL Rahul defends outside his off stump.

India's openers remain watchful and Rahul sees off a maiden from the England captain.

The run rate is at 2.76 India will not be bothered by that in the slightest. If they can get through to lunch with 10 wickets in the hutch it will be job done.

Jack Rutter: A lot of people saying we should have batted first. Overcast conditions, we have bowled well and have beaten the edge about a dozen times. On another day India would be two or three wickets down. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I was late this morning. Dropped my daughter off at nursery, then discovered I'd forgotten my accreditation to get into the ground, so had to go home to get it.

By the time I got here, the queues outside were pretty long, in places where I haven't seen them at this ground before. One fan told a steward he was diabetic and was wary about being asked to stand for so long.

There are still quite a few empty seats in the temporary stand, but that isn't unusual here for a working day.

To the naked eye it seems like there's been a lot of movement through the air today for England's seamers - and especially Chris Woakes.

However, Ashwanth from CricViz has just dug out the following which suggests maybe the overheads are creating the illusion.

Average swing in the first 15 overs on day one

    • 1st Test - 1.46°
    • 2nd Test - 0.66°
    • 3rd Test - 1.64°
    • 4th Test - 0.88°

Average seam movement in the first 15 overs on day one

    • 1st Test - 0.64°
    • 2nd Test - 0.65°
    • 3rd Test - 0.76°
    • 4th Test - 0.72°

We arrived at 10.45 and were in 30 mins later. It was still slow but admittedly we cut it fine. Reading that someone got here an hour earlier and isn't in the ground over an hour after us makes us feel very lucky with our queue choice but it's madness. Must be some terrible organisation going on with directing "traffic" and having enough staff at each entrance for bag checks. Not good enough.

    Tom, Manchester

Old Trafford's organisation was also shocking last summer and the one before that. Had to queue at least 15 minutes to go to the loo in the middle of play each time, end up missing about an hour's play across the day because of the shoddy facilities.

    James, Birmingham

Re Chris @ 12.11: It shouldn’t be necessary to rock up three hours before the start of play. Absolutely shameful scenes at Old Trafford. I turned up at Lord’s around 10.30am on day one and was inside the ground literally within two minutes.

Ben Stokes is coming down the pitch on his follow through to Yashasvi Jaiswal and possibly trying to engage or unsettle the India opener.

Jaiswal is stone-faced in response, though.

A bouncer from the England captain midway through the over has Jaiswal taking evasive action, but he does not seem remotely perturbed.

Re Anon @ 12:07: Normally, I’d agree, but hasn’t this England side shown it’s one of the greatest chasing sides in cricketing history in recent years? It also seems to me that they are more comfortable chasing than defending a lead.

    Ant

Re Anon @ 12:07: Heaven forbid this England team have to chase the game to win, famously Stokes and his team hate to do that don't they. An hour in and the doom mongering commences!

Yashasvi Jaiswal got a thick edge. It went very, very quickly indeed.

    Wonderful stuff, Phil.

England have three slips in place for Brydon Carse.

Yashasvi Jaiswal flashes a cut which comes off the shoulder of his bat and whooshes past third slip. Zak Crawley dives but cannot quite get a hand on it.

Four more added to Jaiswal's score.

Tuning in to TMS with my one-week-old son Robin — already wearing his tiny cricket vest, hand-knitted by his grandma (stitching at 90mph, just like Jofra Archer). His mum’s here too, pretending not to mind that I’m encouraging his first word to be ‘ROOOOT'. First of many Tests together.

Ben Stokes hits KL Rahul on the front pad as the India opener attempts to work his penultimate ball to leg. There's a loud appeal, but the ball looks to be slipping down the leg side.

Stokes grimaces and decides not to review.

Arrived Old Trafford 09:45. Still way back in huge queue moving slower than a snail's pace. Have paid over £100 for ticket. Several breweries in and around Stretford and Salford nearby. Hopefully whoever has orchestrated this hasn't also organised drinks there later.

The organisation at Old Trafford today is really not helping the arguments against its exclusion from the 2027 Ashes series.

Hearing about the queues to get into Old Trafford does justify my dad’s decision for us all to meet at the tram station just after 8am with a 6am wake up.

I do think when Ben Stokes got to the ground, it was bowl first conditions. About 15 minutes before the toss, the weather changed slightly. I would've batted first but England haven't bowled badly at all.

Suitably refreshed, Chris Woakes continues after drinks.

Again there's late movement after he beats the bat. He finishes the over with his hands on his head.

England have just not had the breaks this morning.

Not batting first in a Test match is very foolish. A wicket very rarely improves during a test match. Batting second you are always chasing the game.

Win the toss, and bat. If you're not sure, win the toss, think about it, then bat. If you're really not sure, win the toss, consult the coach, then bat.
