  1. drinks break

India 42-0 at drinkspublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 23 July

England's hunt for wickets under grey skies has been a fruitless one so far this morning as India reach drinks having seen off the first hour.

You see so many different types of square cut, this was pure technique. The timing, KL Rahul just places it. That's a wonderful shot.

From what I've seen so far, this pitch is absolutely fine. If India can get a decent number they can put England under some pressure.

  3. Ind 42-0published at 14 overs

Brydon Carse bounds in with his tongue pressed into the top his lip, perhaps belying his pontification on what delivery is going to give England a breakthrough here.

His third ball is not the one, though. It's short, wide and a lovely back-foot cut from KL Rahul crisply sent to the boundary for four.

In the first 10 overs, England have bowled 33% of their deliveries on the shorter side, while 41% of the time firing it fuller - both the highest for the first 10 overs of day one in this series. They have bowled just 26% on a good length, the lowest in the series.

Isaac, a member of the public spoken to by BBC Newsbeat

BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat have been out and about speaking to excited fans as they head to the Test.

Isaac has hopped off the train from Wrexham to Manchester. Newsbeat’s first question - are England going to win the series? “One hundred per cent” he says confidently.

“Our bowling’s been really good. We displayed it in the last test and I think Jofra Archer is very dangerous. Ben Stokes and him can really do some damage. Harry Brook and Duckett. It’s a very dangerous team.”

It’s been pretty heated between England and India this series. Yesterday, India’s captain Shubman Gill accused England of acting contrary to the “spirit of cricket”. But, what does Isaac reckon?

“I love seeing teams getting a bit agitated with each other. I watch football and rugby normally and love it when that stuff kind of happens.

“I think you need to show it – it’s great entertainment”

  6. Ind 33-0published at 13 overs

Chris Woakes hits Yashasvi Jaiswal on the pad with the first ball of his seventh over and England appeal vociferously. In fact, Zak Crawley is jumping up and down like a jack-in-a-box on a spring. A Zak-in-a-box as it were.

There's conflab about sending it upstairs but Ben Stokes is unconvinced. Ollie Pope's views are gathered at square leg regarding height which cements it in Stokes' mind.

TV replays show there was, in fact, an inside edge anyway.

Terrible crowd management at the Test match at Old Trafford. Still thousands queueing outside to get in.

Brydon Carse into the attack for England.

A couple of deliveries from the Durham seamer seem to hurry KL Rahul, but he emerges from the over unscathed.

India will be the happier of the two teams right now.

A bit of news from England...

Josh Tongue is going to leave the camp at lunch to play in the last two days of Nottinghamshire's County Championship match against Hampshire.

Jacob Bethell, in contrast, is going to stay with England.

There's a little bit out there but probably not as much as England thought there would be. It looks a good surface though, India should be able to get a decent number on here.

  11. Ind 31-0published at 11 overs

Yashasvi Jaiswal picks up a boundary off Chris Woakes with punchy drive into the offside off his penultimate delivery.

Woakes then the outside edge with a beauty which draws a broad grin from Jaiswal. Woakes responds with a wry smirk of his own.

I think this is a good toss to lose. India aren't missing out on anything by batting first.

If India get through this first hour and half unscathed it’s going to a long exhausting day and Test match for England.

  14. Ind 27-0published at 10 overs

For some reason, Jofra Archer has a long sleeve cream garment under his short sleeve England shirt. Can only assume it's to keep his muscles loose even if it the cricket fashion purists would not approve.

A steepling bouncer from Archer to finish over and Jamie Smith takes it spectacularly above his head behind the stumps.

India's openers have done well to see off these first 10 overs with their wickets in tact.

India will be delighted to have not lost a wicket yet. Chris Woakes has bowled some good balls but let some short ones go, which have been punished. It's not a pitch for the short ball but Jofra Archer is getting a bit of movement with it now.

I'm an England supporter through and through but listening to KL Rahul bat is a treat. Best hair in world cricket too! Poor Woakes though, must be the unluckiest bowler this series.

Another peach from Chris Woakes midway through the over. The Warwickshire man angles the ball into Yashasvi Jaiswal and then nips it away.

Next delivery Jaiswal breaks his bat after fending off one which sharply came back into him. The handle has just come lose from the blade.

Woakes bowling superbly, without much to show for it so far.
