Sri Lanka have clearly got something to play for here.

  2. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 34 overs

    Bashir c sub (Madushka) b A Fernando 4 (Eng 156)

All over. Shoaib Bashir gets something on a bouncer down the leg side and up goes the finger.

Sri Lanka will need 219 to win. We have a game on our hands.

  3. Eng 155-9published at 33.3 overs

It looks like being non-stop bouncers from Sri Lanka to Josh Hull.

  4. 6 runs

    Eng 155-9published at 33.1 overs

Josh Hull lofts a huge six - his first in Test cricket!

He couldn't have looked any more like Stuart Broad playing that.

  5. Eng 149-9published at 33 overs

    Hull 0, Bashir 4

The over ends with Sri Lanka appealing for a catch behind. The wise head of Angelo Mathews shrugs, suggesting it would be silly to review.

    He was right.

Gilchrist-esque from Smith and that is an extremely high bar.

Shoaib Bashir joins Josh Hull in the middle. How many can this final wicket add?

The control Olly Stone had on the first shot wasn't there on this one.

Sri Lanka will be delighted because he can score runs.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 32.2 overs

    Stone c sub (Madushka) b Kumara 10 (Eng 145-9)

Gone this time! Olly Stone flashes at a ball from Kumara and gets a thin edge.

  13. Eng 145-8published at 32.1 overs

Olly Stone annoyed the Sri Lanka bowlers when he bowled bouncers at them. One or two words were said.

He might be getting a few of his own after driving Lahiru Kumara off the back foot.

Josh Hull is just about getting away with these.

    He survives the over.

  15. Eng 141-8published at 32 overs

    Stone 6, Hull 0

Looking at it the other way, Smith had used those very same shots to get England into that much-improved position. Sri Lanka's bowlers were tired. They would have been coming back after a sitdown and an energy bar if he waited until after tea. Was that over the best opportunity to score more runs?

Being hyper-critical here but that was poor decision-making by Smith with the last ball before tea. Having got England into a good position he's now handed the chance back to Sri Lanka. Inexperience.

There are, in theory, 47 overs left in the day.

We might get around two hours' worth of play before the light goes.

Mike McMahon: Jamie Smith is a very special talent! What a knock that was, only 67 but the manner of it and the effect it could have on the game is immense! That’s why you pick him over Foakes.

  19. Eng 140-8published at 17:03 British Summer Time 8 September

But now back to the present...

Josh Hull has padded up and joined Olly Stone in the middle.

England's lead is 202. They need a few more from these final two wickets.

This innings is exactly the reason Jamie Smith has been picked ahead of Ben Foakes. Foakes just doesn’t have this style of innings in his locker. Smith will be a future great in my opinion!
