I don't watch much cricket but that was exceptional from Smith, given the precarious England position. Well played young man!

Smith has shown all summer he's good. He got his first Test century at Old Trafford, having already made a mark against West Indies earlier in the summer.

That was something else, although England are not out of danger yet.

That was a remarkable four overs.

England were 84-7, with Smith on 15 from 31 deliveries.

They go into tea 140-8, leading by 202.

After all that I'm in need of any drink, any crisps. Here's Matt Henry to take you through the evening session.

Smith on form reminds me of Pietersen, and that's really saying something. That was a remarkable 15 minutes.

Jamie Smith is disappointed with himself, he saw a scoring option and went for the big shot again. He didn't quite got the elevation but that's a great shot.

    He might have saved England.

    But now he's gone!

Smith absolutely leathers the final ball of the session into the hands of Mendis at mid-wicket.

He'll be disappointed when he looked in such good touch, but these last few overs may just have saved this Test for England.

What an excellent shot from a ball that really wasn't that bad.

    This is a punishing innings.

  14. Eng 140-7published at 30.5 overs

Olly Stone is denied a four as Lahiru Kumara lumbers after his drive through the covers and then somehow manages to flick the ball away from the ropes with a last gasp dive.

But, again, that brings Smith on strike, and Sri Lanka are made to suffer.

He bisects two fielders on the leg side ropes to pick up a boundary, then takes two more fours, crashing through the covers and punching through mid-wicket.

Beautiful shot, great use of the feet.

Stunning batting by Jamie Smith in a controlled fashion.

Every run is being cheered because they're so important. England's lead is slender.
