South Africa have been disciplined with the ball so far. 80% of their deliveries have been good or short length, and England have scored at just 4.4 runs per over in those zones - it's only against full balls where they've broken free, scoring at 8.5 runs per over.

What better way for Harry Brook to announce himself as England captain than scoring a hundred today?

This is a good battle here between Mulder and the batters.

Mulder is clearly the bowler who could get something. He is bowling slightly slower round about the 130kph region.

Joe Root and Harry Brook are pretty content to rotate the strike and accept the extras which South Africa keep gifting their way. Two more wides from Wiaan Mulder.

In the England dressing room, Jos Buttler is shadow batting.

Brook and Root are both having a look. Both are capable of taking aggression to the bowler, particularly Root. He has brilliant power without looking too violent towards the bowler.

  6. Eng 87-3published at 15 overs

Keshav Maharaj absolutely races through his first over and concedes just two singles from it.

It will be interesting to see if Maharaj can find some spin here. He has a very easy action and has played a lot of cricket in recent times.

South Africa's field has a long-off and long-on in situation which leaves the mid-wicket region nice and clear.

With the drinks packed away, it's time for a bit of spin. In comes left-armer Keshav Maharaj.

Root has just played a major innings a few days ago and now he has to do it all again here for England.

It has been England's usual start. Brook and Root have put on a steady partnership. Rabada has banged a few in short to keep things changing but the run-rate looks ideal at the moment.

Drinks break - Eng 85-3published at 14 overs

    Root 28, Brook 16

Joe Root has pulled out of his shot three times against Kagiso Rabada, twice in this over alone. He's pointed to his ear a couple of times as if he's distracted by a noise in the crowd.

Time for drinks. England are 85-3.

  12. Eng 82-3published at 13 overs

That felt a lot longer than eight balls. A couple of wides in Wiaan Mulder's second over and five runs from it.

It is surprising that there is such a small crowd today. These are two big international teams playing on a Saturday.

This is the smallest crowd of the tournament so far which is disappointing as there is a big push for international cricket out here.

    Glorious Joe Root batting.

He has no right to hit that ball for four but it keeps running away. It is something we have got used to seeing him do, re-building once again for England here.

  15. Eng 77-3published at 12 overs

Kagiso Rabada is having no luck today.

He had Root dropped on three in his first over and in his second, Harry Brook gloves one to backward point which falls just short of Tristan Stubbs.

The over finishes with a boundary from Root, who clips the ball to the rope.

In this situation, it's hard as a team when you're playing in a dead rubber. But you still go out and put your best foot forward.

The hard thing is that your confidence is completely shot by this point and the harder you try, the worst it seems to get.

This team look to show an aggressive approach, but in a 50-over game perhaps that's not the best way to go about things. You have time to catch up and get runs. You don't always need to rush.

  17. Eng 70-3published at 11 overs

Joe Root is ticking along nicely. With eight runs off Wiaan Mulder he moves to 22 (26).

That's not usually a shot you see from Joe Root when he hits a six. He got right under it.

Root was looking for that shot earlier in the over, but didn't get the length he wanted. A hell of a shot.

    Eng 68-3published at 10.4 overs

Bosh. Joe Root gets under a shorter delivery from Wiaan Mulder and pulls it hard into the fence in front of the stands.

  20. Eng 62-3published at 10.1 overs

Wiaan Mulder replaces Marco Jansen in South Africa's attack and immediately has his arms in the air, begging for the wicket of Joe Root.

Captain Aiden Markram is unmoved. It looked like it was outside the line.
