In their last 40 ODIs, England have made it out of the first powerplay without losing a wicket just five times.

Brook has freed himself up there. An extremely powerful shot, he opened it up and bang!

He used his feet very late and smoked it into the off-side.

  3. Eng 62-3published at 10 overs

That's the end of the powerplay.

England have gifted Marco Jansen three wickets, with Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, and Ben Duckett back in the changing rooms.

Joe Root (14 off 20) and Harry Brook (12 off 10) are trying to rebuild.

The prospect of England v South Africa has certainly not bribed people out of their homes in Karachi today.

Root almost gave a catch but it's rifled to the boundary. This short ball for Jansen seems to be rather effective for England.

Root was very quick onto it and pulled it in front of his face.

Marco Jansen is all over the place with the ball. He's picked three wickets and brought some poor shots from England's batters, but when he gets it wrong, he's punished.

Two boundaries for Joe Root, the second from pouncing on a short ball.

  7. Eng 52-3published at 8.3 overs

Joe Root picks up his first boundary of the day. He splats Marco Jansen down the ground. A lovely drive.

Joe Root isn't the sort of player you want to be giving too many chances to. That was South Africa's biggest chance to get him out.

  9. Eng 47-3published at 8 overs

England will be relieved with the outcome of Kagiso Rabada's first over. Nine runs from it and a lifeline for Joe Root. South Africa may come to rue that drop.

It's always the way that when a ball gets dropped, the next one goes for four.

Brook is showing his class with double boundaries. He has hit them so well and they raced away to the boundary, the second one a little bit more over-pitched. The outfield is so fast here.

    Eng 39-3

It's a difficult chance for Wiaan Mulder, diving away to his left at backward point, but he gets two hands to it and will be disappointed with the outcome.

Kagiso Rabada nearly bags a wicket with his first delivery. Joe Root steals a single.

At least England have got through to the change bowlers.

    Oh wait, here's Kagiso Rabada...

  14. Eng 38-3published at 7 overs

Harry Brook - England's next captain? - has scored 25, 3, 19, 31, and 0 in his past five ODI innings.

England need a big knock from him today.

A soft dismissal. It was a poor delivery really, and would have been called a wide.

It's unfortunate for Duckett. He will feel as though he could have easily played that for four or just left it completely.

Duckett swishes his bat in frustration as he walks away. He was looking to play away into the off-side and it went straight to Jansen.

    Gone!

Ben Duckett tries to flick the ball off his pad but a leading edge sends it back to Marco Jansen, who takes a two-handed catch high to his left to collect his third wicket of the day.

What is there left to say about England's batting?

England doing their best to ensure that Australia have the more difficult semi-final draw. Clever.

The pressure is on now for the batters lower down the order and Duckett needs to re-build.

It's a far too familiar position for England in this competition.

  20. Eng 37-2published at 6 overs

Lungi Ngidi grimaces and reaches for his lower leg a couple of times as he bowls his third over. Is there a problem there for South Africa?

England take two singles from it.
