Salt has thrown his bat at that. He did hit it in the air, but it was high enough and hard enough to land safely.

Right on cue, Phil Salt is off the mark.

It's a wide delivery from Marco Jansen and Salt flays it into the off side and away for four.

Phil Salt has copped a lot of criticism recently. However his record is very similar to another iconic ODI opener - Brendon McCullum.

When opening the batting in ODIs both average 33, but Salt's strike rate is much higher (113) than McCullum's (103).

England batters Phil Salt and Ben Duckett are out in the middle.

Marco Jansen has the new ball in hand for South Africa.

For the last time in this Champions Trophy, let's get England's innings under way.

The two previous games at this venue in the 2025 CT were won by the side batting first, so no surprises in England's choice.

However, since it's return to hosting international cricket, Karachi has been relatively balanced - six bat first wins, four chasing wins.

Well, it's been an interesting couple of days for England. On Wednesday, they were eliminated from the Champions Trophy by Afghanistan. On Friday, Jos Buttler stepped down as captain.

Plenty of talking points - if you're watching along, please do get in touch with your thoughts (and remember to pop your name at the end of your message).

It's a horrible position to be in for England. They have nothing to play for, except perhaps a bit of pride.

There won't be much tension in the camp after the captain news yesterday, they will just want to give Jos a nice send off.

Jos [Buttler] looked dejected. As a captain, you know when your time is up and it's better for him to leave on his own terms than to be pushed out.

I have played both under and with him and it's a shame to see him go out in this manner. He deserves more for what he has given to this team and to England cricket.

England's tournament has reached Karachi, not in the manner they hoped.

That Jos Buttler resigned was no surprise after the defeat by Afghanistan but no-one expected him to do so yesterday.

We were due to speak to Joe Root but we guessed something was up when Buttler arrived at the press conference flanked by Brendon McCullum.

South Africa captain Aiden Markram: " It'll be a good challenge against a good English team. I'm not too disappointed we're chasing this evening.

"We've had some illness around the camp. Tony de Zorzi and Temba Bavuma are back at the hotel. Hopefully they recover quickly and if we progress, they can play a big role.

"Tristan Stubbs goes straight in at the top. He's a Test match batter and a technically good player. If he gets going in the powerplay, it'll be somehing nice to watch."

England captain Jos Buttler: "It looks a decent wicket, there are a few cracks in it so having seen the other game on it we feel it could be good to bat first."

On resigning as captain on Friday: "It just felt like the right time. There is no need to wait around and give that decision. It saves you guys guessing what I'm going to do and see when I'm going to get sacked. I'm looking forward to doing it one final time.

"I've got lots of conflicting thoughts. It hasn't panned out how I dreamt it - there has been some good moments along the way."

  12. Jos Buttler's final match as captainpublished at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time

Jos Buttler stepped down as England captain on Friday afternoon, with today’s clash with South Africa his final match in charge.

His departure comes just days after England were eliminated from the Champions Trophy by Afghanistan, their third ICC tournament disappointment in a row after failing to defend their titles at the 2023 World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup.

"My over-riding emotions are sadness and disappointment, but I'm sure in time that will pass and I'll get back to really enjoying my cricket," Buttler said.

"Also, I'll be able to reflect on what an immense honour it is to captain your country and all the special things that come with it."
