A lovely stroke from Duckett. He dispatched it right out of the middle of the bat and it sped across the ground.

Duckett looks as though he is enjoying his time out at the crease and he is playing some glorious shots. He is certainly one of the positives of England's batting in this tournament.

Ben Duckett is a joy to watch.

Off the fourth delivery of the over, he flicks the ball off his pad and it races away for four. He follows it up with a dashed two before defending the final ball. His timing is excellent.

More Marco Jansen from South Africa. Can he make it three wickets in three overs?

  4. Eng 28-2published at 4 overs

A sensible over from England's two in-form batters. Eight from it.

Perhaps England aren't good enough. I can see the merits of Salt as a T20 cricketer, but 50-over cricket is completely different. You need the qualities to stay at the crease for longer.

Most sides send out their Test openers to get through the first ten overs, get some runs and then you're quids in.

  6. Eng 27-2published at 3.3 overs

    Excellent running all round.

Tristan Stubbs chases hard to the rope following a mis-field to deny England a boundary. Ben Duckett and Joe Root dart through for three. As a spectator, I love watching players run three. If I'm batting, not a chance that's happening.

Really disappointing team news in my opinion. Salt has been poor for a while now and Smith not covered himself in glory with the 2 shots that got him out. Think it was a great chance to give Banton a go. And may as well have played Ahmed because Livingstone isn't good enough to stay in this team in the future and we're going to need a Rashid replacement very soon I think.

    George

I get that England want to salvage some pride here bu they can't get out of these same patterns. This is a free hit of a game. Where's Ahmed, Banton and Atkinson? Players who were picked with little or no experience. Archer and Rash are still vital to this team but they cant win anything playing in this game?

It looks ugly. I've been on the end of England tours myself when there's nothing left in the tank and it looks as though the team is not trying.

They are trying, but there's just nothing left to give.

Marco Jansen hasn't bowled especially well in his first two overs - his radar has been a little bit off - but he's got two wickets next to his name.

Three overs in and England are already in the rebuilding phase.

Anyone got any interesting plans for this afternoon?

Out he goes for a duck. Completely mistimed. It sounded like a hammer missing a nail and crashing into a plank of wood.

Those Salt and Smith wickets need to be seriously reviewed.

To quote the Chuckle Brothers, oh dear, oh dear.

A cheap wicket for England. Jamie Smith edges an easy catch to Aiden Markram at mid-on and begins the long, slow trudge back to the changing room.

Joe Root enters in the third over.

Heads in hands for South Africa.

Jamie Smith edges Marco Jansen and it drops agonisingly short of the slip fielder.

Phil Salt's innings encapsulating all that is wrong with this England set up. Bored of it now.

Duckett is not being rash here. That ball was a little bit full on leg stump and he has timed it beautifully.

  16. Eng 18-1published at 2 overs

Lungi Ngidi opens from the other end for South Africa. He doesn't get his line right, however, and Ben Duckett profits with a couple of casually-struck boundaries.

Salt clearly wasn't setting himself for the long haul and this is the danger England have today.

Caught at mid-wicket! A very mixed over and Salt clubbed an easy catch.

It seemed he was going to thrash at everything but he was never in control of that shot.

There's hardly anyone in the ground. That is a lonely walk for Phil Salt after scores of 10, 12 and eight in the tournament.

Oh Phil. This is not the start that England will have wanted.

Having chanced his arm two balls earlier and narrowly missed a flying fielder at mid-wicket, he can't survive the opening over. A top edge pops up in the air and Rassie van der Dussen, on the edge of the circle, is safely underneath it.

    Disappointing.
