Summary

  1. SL 157-4published at 46 overs

    Frustration all-round.

Root apologises to the bowler and seems to indicate that he didn't pick it up quickly, but it did go straight in and straight back out again.

  2. dropped catch

Mathews dropped on 65published at 45.5 overs

    SL 157-4

    Oh, dear.

Matthew Potts creates the chance - finally - but Joe Root spills it.

A flashing drive, no footwork, it travels quickly to Root but it bursts through the hands.

Angelo Mathews came in to this innings on a pair, and has responded with a gritty 65 (off 127 balls).

    Player.

  4. SL 157-4published at 45 overs

    Lead by 35

    A freebie.

Gus Atkinson strays on to the pads and Kamindu Mendis helps it on its way for four.

Good to see this response from Sri Lanka after the flurry of wickets. They're still in a tricky position without much of a lead, but they've frustrated England, who would've been hoping for a day three finish at one point!

  5. SL 153-4published at 44 overs

    Lead by 31

A maiden for Matthew Potts, but no extravagant movement from the changed ball as yet.

Sri Lanka have fought very impressively throughout this Test match and have shown glimpses of their best, so those first two hours this morning where they completely let England off the hook must be a real frustration.

I reckon we're going to get a double bowling change with the ball that's just been changed. Let's see if Woakes can get it moving now the clouds have come over ever so slightly.

Here is that no-ball from earlier, when England reviewed a wicket.

Jamie Smith's gloves were in front of the stumps, and it turns out he had been previously warned about this by the square leg umpire.

This pitch has done nothing, but we've seen four really awkward balls during this match.

  9. SL 153-4published at 43 overs

    Lead by 31

Short, and helped on its way for four by Angelo Mathews, who gets reward for his patience so far.

The session is scheduled until 18:30 BST tonight but we could go for another half-hour if light allows - which it looks like it should.

Ollie Pope seems a little agitated and is searching for a wicket. He's trying different plans and theories.

  11. SL 148-4published at 42 overs

    Lead by 26

England kick up a bit of a fuss and succeed in getting the ball changed.

I think I've seen this one before...?

Dinesh Chandimal has had an X-ray and been cleared of a fracture to his right thumb. He should be able to bat again in this innings.

  13. SL 146-4published at 41 overs

    Lead by 24

A Gus Atkinson maiden, but the partnership has passed 50 and is beginning to frustrate England.

There is hope for those day four ticket holders yet.

The short-ball tactic has been a real feature of a Broad and Anderson-less England so far this summer.

Percentage of short deliveries by England pacers in home Tests since 2020:

    • 2020 - 34%
    • 2021 - 25%
    • 2022 - 33%
    • 2023 - 36%
    • 2024 - 45%

When it's the harder ball, that's when something can happen on the pitch. Kamindu is trying to put pressure on Bashir and it's a time where not much is happening. In terms of the bowlers, if you do allow England to get through many overs with not many runs it could be a problem.

  16. SL 146-4published at 40 overs

    Chance!

It's technically a missed stumping but it's a harsh call. Kamindu Mendis edges behind, is well out of his crease but it hits Jamie Smith on the pads, he's unable to get a glove anywhere near it.

Mendis responds with a gorgeous drive through the covers for four. Shot.

Poor Angelo Mathews, he kept running behind so many balls that kept refusing to go to the boundary. But he is not afraid to go aerial.

Eight from Gus Atkinson's over but it's boundary-less, with the ball still plugging in the outfield - much to Angelo Mathews' frustration.

Kamindu times it very nicely and he's not afraid to go for it, as there's no one about on the boundary.
