That shot reminded me of last year's Ashes when Nathan Lyon limped off, and England proceeded to throw away three wickets.

  5. SL 191-6published at 56 overs

Back comes Dinesh Chandimal, who retired hurt earlier today after being struck on the hand by Mark Wood.

He gets the second stage of his innings going straight away, pushing a single into mid-wicket.

The fast bowler has gone off, that's a big bonus for Sri Lanka, but Rathnayake goes for an almighty swipe at Joe Root.

Root is a decent bowler but that is just soft. Mendis is doing such a brilliant job, just support him.

Sri Lanka could've made it to the close with a glimmer of hope.

That's an awful shot. What was he doing, 15 minutes to go?!

    Rathnayake c Duckett b Root 10 (SL 190-6)

Perhaps a little too confident from Milan Rathnayake.

The debutant evidently fancies his chances against a part-time spinner introduced a short notice.

He goes for a big mow and simply manages to sky the ball to Ben Duckett at mid-off.

    No need for it.

England are understandably very, very sensitive about Mark Wood. They've taken the ball off him quickly.

    Uh-oh.

Mark Wood pulls up in his run-up. He doesn't look in serious discomfort, but Ollie Pope isn't taking any chances - he sends the seamer off the field.

Joe Root will finish the over.

Our friends at Cricviz have been crunching the numbers and since the ball change, it's not as dramatic as you might think. The average swing since the ball change is the same as the 10 overs prior to the ball change. Woakes, however, is benefitting individually, 1.07 degrees of swing on average for him compared to 0.80 degrees overall.

  12. SL 190-5published at 55 overs

Rathnayake is playing confidently, driving Woakes to mid-off for two.

A picks up a further single square.

Really enjoying watching Kamindu Mendis bat. Good solid defence, leaves the good ball and punishes the bad ones. Seems so calm at the crease. Great to see.

Wood responds with a full ball - blocked out, I think Mendis was expecting a bouncer.

A big grin from the England tyro.

A tremendous shot to reach the half-century, like something you'd see in a white-ball game.

I don't think Mark Wood will enjoy that.

  16. Fifty for Kamindu Mendispublished at 53.4 overs

    Wallop!

A cracking way for Kamindu Mendis to reach fifty, heaving Mark Wood over the mid-wicket ropes with a big swing of the bat.

    It comes from 95 balls.

It is extraordinary how much everything has changed since the ball change.

The problem for Sri Lanka is you want to see some more deterioration in the pitch. This pitch is holding up as it always does. For Sri Lanka to have any chance they need to get a 200 lead and that would be remarkable from here.

  19. SL 182-5published at 53 overs

Mendis attempts a big flash of a drive, missing the ball entirely - he was too far away to offer any chance of an edge.

    A maiden for Chris Woakes.

    Another inside edge!

It looks pretty faint, but it's enough to save Mendis.
