    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

That was a high class shot. The punch through the off-side was perfection and on most grounds around the world that would be a boundary.

  3. SL 182-5published at 52 overs

Time for a Mark Wood burst - he replaces Matty Potts.

Tidy punch through the covers from Kusal Mendis, deserves four, only picks up three.

Rathnayake, who made a first-class high score of 72 in the first innings, follows up with a four, crashing the ball through point.

  4. Not outpublished at 51 overs

    SL 175-5

He has got an inside edge on it, Michael!

Not sure why he took so long to review it, given he seemed to make a fairly solid connection.

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

That's a ball that's come back sharp to Rathnayake, it looks out. My only thought was has he got inside edge on it?

  6. Umpire reviewpublished at 51 overs

A second wicket in three balls?

Milan Rathnayake is struck on the pads, the finger goes up.

After a bit of a chat, the debutant decides to review.

That changed ball has finally worked for England. Mathews batted so well.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 50.4 overs

    Mathews c Potts b Woakes 65 (SL 173-5)

    Finally, Mathews departs!

The Sri Lanka all-rounder had looked very uncomfortable in the last half hour or so, and after being dropped a few overs ago he offers up another chance.

It's a leading edge as he tried to turn the ball into the leg side, spooning up to point and taken by a diving Matty Potts.

The end of a partnership of 78.

  9. Postpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 23 August

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Sri Lanka are fighting and will go away knowing whatever the outcome that they have competed hard and are making life difficult for England.

  10. SL 173-4published at 50 overs

Kamindu Mendis denies Matty Potts a maiden, getting on top of his final deliveries and cutting hard to the boundary.

The England bowler scowls as he wanders off to his fielding position.

  11. Postpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 23 August

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I think there's movement and a real glow on one side of the ball. It's swinging around and it's becoming more difficult.

  12. SL 169-4published at 49 overs

Chris Woakes almost immediately cashes in one of the wickets I hold in my gift, as Angelo Mathews has an ugly waft at a ball that moved a little.

The England all-rounder then closes with an absolute ripper past Mathews' outside edge.

  13. Postpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 23 August

    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC cricket correspondent

Mathews is not a stylish batsmen. He's quite quirky and unusual but, very effective.

  14. Postpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 23 August

    Thanks Ffion.

Let me be the wicket genie, I'll grant you three wickets by the close.

  15. SL 168-4published at 48 overs

    Lead by 46

Four leg byes rub salt into the wound, and five wides rub in a little more.

Sloppy from England these past couple of overs.

Here's Mike Peter. Let's see if he can bring some good fortune.

  16. Postpublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 23 August

    Alex Hartley
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

It's frustrating for England. We're saying Sri Lanka need to concentrate, but England do as well.

  17. dropped catch

Kamindu dropped on 39published at 47.1 overs

    SL 158-4

    Another goes down.

Luck is not on Potts' side today.

Kamindu Mendis flashes to Gus Atkinson at point, it's a tough chance low to his left but he manages to get two hands on it and therefore, should be taken.

    Two big moments.

  18. How's stat?!published at 17:57 British Summer Time 23 August

Mathews averages 55 against the short ball in his Test career and hasn't been dismissed by the short ball in England. Seven of his 10 dismissals to pace in England have come on a good length (6-8m), the same length that forced the edge off Potts.

  19. SL 158-4published at 47 overs

    Lead by 36

That drop aside, there are encouraging signs for England because the ball is starting to move.

Both Atkinson and Potts have got the ball nipping around all of a sudden, as a bit more cloud comes over.

    Alex Hartley

Root should've caught that, he was in position ready. He was just off balance trying to take the catch on his left, and going backwards with the momentum of the ball. He will be so frustrated with himself.
