That is the third time in the last 28 ODIs that batters in positions 3, 4, and 5 have all scored at least a half-century against England in an ODI. It happened only six times in their 778-match ODI history before that.

Too little too late, but you have to marvel at Adil Rashid sometimes. That wicket-taking ball was barely over 40mph.

  3. Ind 222-4published at 34 overs

KL Rahul in to try and see India home.

He takes a single behind square to retain the strike.

  4. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 33.4 overs

    Axar b Rashid 52 (221-4)

    Finally, a wicket!

Like Buttler and Bethell in England's innings, Axar Patel falls shortly after reaching his fifty, bowled by an Adil Rashid delivery that turning sharply.

A partnership of 108 comes to a close.

Some England fans seem to have memories like goldfish. Today seems to be 'have a go at Liam Livingstone' day. Can't bat? So, was it someone else who pummelled the West Indies for 124 not out off 85 balls all of three months ago?

For those complaining about underperforming players, don’t worry. As Steven Finn wrote recently, McCullum is “ruthless” with underperforming players. Just ask Zak Crawley how ruthless McCullum is.

    The players are having drinks.

    India need 29 from 17 overs - do-able, I reckon.

  7. 50 runs

50 for Axar Patelpublished at 33 overs

    Ind 220-3

Brings the half-century up with a boundary!

He lashes Carse past the mid-off fielder - who should probably cut it off - to reach the ropes.

His third ODI fifty, and a first in India.

It seems to me that England need to find an answer to their problem quickly through looking forwards and nurturing some new talent. Solution futuregazing hothousing, if you will.

  9. Ind 215-3published at 32.3 overs

And there goes Gill again, crashing Carse for four through mid-wicket to bring up the hundred partnership off 98 balls.

Gill follows up with a single towards square-leg and India add another two because Carse has over-stepped.

Axar can't get the follow-up away.

I thought the England women's team was clueless and hopeless in recent weeks against the Australians. Now the men's team are completely out-classed and lacking ideas in India. Not a great time to be following England internationally! Roll on the start of our domestic season... might be a more enjoyable watch.

  11. Ind 208-3published at 32 overs

A maiden over for the returning Adil Rashid!

Just the second of the innings, with Gill unable to get him away.

The required run-rate has ticked up from 2.15 to 2.27 runs an over.

    All going England's way...

Other than India being far better at bowling, batting and fielding, there is little to choose between the teams.

England scored 129-4 between overs 11-40 at a run-rate of 4.3 runs per over with eight fours and one six. India have scored 135-1 already in that phase in 10 fewer overs. Shubman Gill has scored more boundaries in this phase (10 fours, zero sixes) than what England managed cumulatively (eight fours, one six).

  14. Ind 208-3published at 31 overs

    41 needed from 19 overs

A better over from Carse, just two singles from it after 17 runs were scored off his previous one.

Not that it matters really, the only currency that matters for England here is wickets.

Methers: Dawson is England's best all-rounder at the moment. Why oh why are the selectors still persisting with Livingstone is beyond me. This team needs an overhaul ASAP.

  16. Ind 206-3published at 30 overs

A 12th four for Gill, lifting Joe Root's penultimate ball over the square leg fielder.

He moves to 74, this partnership is now worth 93.

India seem happy to play each ball on its merit and play low risk cricket. Baz looking confused on the side as, if someone just stirred marmite into his noodles.

This is turning into an exhibition. England have no answers, lacking penetration in the middle overs.

  19. Ind 201-3published at 29 overs

And now Gill gets in on the action!

He closes the over with back-to-back fours, digging out a full ball to send it to the point boundary, then pulling the following delivery to the ropes as well.

17 from the over, India are past 200 and cruising.

  20. Ind 192-3published at 28.3 overs

Brydon Carse in for Archer and Axar Patel sets about taking him apart.

He lashes the first ball of the over through the covers for four, then pulls out an exquisite ramp for another four.
