What a start for the Foxes!

Max Holden drives at a fuller ball from Scott Currie's fifth ball of the day and gets a thin edge to Louis Kimber at first slip.

  2. Root closes in on tonpublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 5 May 2024

    Yorkshire 225-2 v Glamorgan 221

The cricketers will have the sun on their backs for the first time in this match at Headingley. Blue skies abound.

That could be ominous for the Glamorgan bowlers with Joe Root (92) and Finlay Bean (140) at the middle.

James Harris will open the bowling to Root

  3. Day Three begins at Old Traffordpublished at 11:00 British Summer Time 5 May 2024

    Lancs 92 & 119-4 v Kent 261

Lancashire remain under considerable scoreboard pressure but the sun is out and the ball won't quite have the shine and bounce of a new one.

A crucial first hour awaits both teams.

Second night watchman (after last night's Will Williams dismissal) George Balderson is back in the middle with Tom Bruce - who is 12 not out.

Wes Agar to bowl first up to Balderson, unbeaten on three.

    Derbys 246 v Sussex 357-5

The visiting team are in a position of strength, lead by Cheteshwar Pujara.

The Indian Test veteran made his ninth century for Sussex on Saturday and returns to the crease unbeaten on 104.

This is only his 19th match for the club. That's quite a record!

Jack Carson is on strike first though - on 18 not out.

He'll face Anuj Dal first up this morning.

  5. Division Two recappublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 5 May 2024

Yorkshire put themselves in a commanding position against Glamorgan on day two at Headingley as their batting line-up fired.

Joe Root was in imperious form, stroking 14 fours in a beautifully-paced unbeaten 92 from 90 balls, with only bad light denying him a century on Saturday.

But the star of the show was Finlay Bean who moved to his new first-class high score, an unbeaten 140 at a tick over a run a ball.

It was the 22 year-old's fourth Championship ton as Yorks closed on 295-2, 74 runs ahead

At Derby, Sussex wrestled the initiative, bowling out Derbyshire for 246 before racing to 357-5 in 83 overs.

The main man was Indian batter Chet Pujara who reached the close 104 not out.

In what was the first day of play after Friday's washout at Lord's, Leicestershire made 306 for two batting points, with Peter Handscomb (109) the main man.

By the close, Sam Robson and Max Holden had guided Middlesex to a promising 64-1.

  6. Lancashire staring down the barrelpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 5 May 2024

    Lancs 92 & 119-4 v Kent 261

This game has turned on its head after Kent seamer Nathan Gilchrist took 6-24 to help bundle the Red Rose out for 92 on Saturday.

Prior to that, this game looked like an even contest, with Kent battling hard against quality bowling in tough conditions on Friday to recover from 83-5 to 261.

Joey Evison made 71 batting at number seven and that innings looks ever more precious in the context of this match.

Lancashire have fared better in the second innings, but remain 50 in arrears with three front line batters and a night watchman already gone.

Defeat today or tomorrow will leave Lancashire firmly rooted to the bottom of the table and badly in need of points to put pressure back on Kent - who began this round ninth in the table - and eighth-placed Hampshire, who are not involved in this round.

In the next round the Red Rose play away against Notts at Trent Bridge.

Well, it was some Saturday in the County Championship as 34 wickets, yes 34, fell in the two Division One matches.

The upshot was that Somerset beat Essex in a thriller at Taunton, with all four innings played out before close on day two.

And Lancashire need a big rearguard to stave off defeat to Kent.

In Division Two it was all about the runs in our three matches.

What will today bring? We'll find out from 11:00, but first a recap of yesterday's play.
