Nick Gubbins has an average of over 44 in List A cricket and has hit 11 centuries, two of them in this season's competition.

His total of 669 runs from 10 innings is second only to Yorkshire's Imam-ul Haq (688) and he has done it with a very respectable strike rate of over 103.

Gubbins made an unbeaten 144 in their opening group game against Glamorgan and later matched that score in a losing cause against Nottinghamshire.

He will be hoping to rediscover that kind of form after lasting just three balls in Hampshire's semi-final win over Yorkshire.

Ethan Brookes has picked up 12 wickets in the One-Day Cup for Worcestershire this season, at an average of 25.83.

The 24-year-old all-rounder struck his maiden first-class century against Hampshire last season and signed a three-year deal at the club in June.

In Worcestershire's semi-final success against Somerset, Brookes took 3-16, including the key wicket of captain James Rew.

He will be fired up to make up a similar impact in today's final, after Worcestershire's relegation from Division One in the County Championship was confirmed in midweek.

You have to go back seven years for the last Hampshire triumph in a 50-over final - a 61-run success over Kent at Lord's, with South African Rilee Rossouw hitting a brilliant 125 off 114 balls at the top of the order.

They reached the final again the following year, but were denied a One-Day Cup double as Somerset came out on top by six wickets in the last domestic final at the home of cricket, and once more in 2023.

Hampshire have won 13 limited-overs trophies over the years, 10 of them in knockout competitions, compared to seven for Worcestershire, their most recent in the 2018 T20 Blast.

Worcestershire's last victory in a List A final was all the way back in 1994 when they defeated Warwickshire by eight wickets in a 60-over game as Graeme Hick and Tom Moody guided them home with more than 10 overs to spare with an unbroken stand of 198.

Leicestershire celebrate after beating Hampshire in the 2023 final

Last year's One-Day Cup final had to be reduced to 20 overs because of the weather and Glamorgan defeated Somerset by 15 runs after setting them a target of 187.

Go back a further 12 months, though, and a full 50-over final in 2023 went right to the very last ball with Hampshire just failing to get home against Leicestershire, who won by two runs.

Wouldn't it be great to see another nail-biter today as the men's white-ball season draws to a close as the teams who finished first and second in Group A earlier in the competition renew their rivalry.

  6. Weather outlookpublished at 10:47 BST 20 September

The BBC Weather summary for Nottingham is not encouraging.

"After a mainly dry start, today will become overcast with outbreaks of rain moving in from the west, these producing heavy downpours in places. A cooler day, becoming breezy later on."

All we can do is keep fingers crossed.

  7. Route to the final - Hampshirepublished at 10:44 BST 20 September

Hampshire began the competition well with four wins in their first five games - the sole defeat coming in a low-scoring game against today's opponents Worcestershire, when they were bundled out for just 194 at New Road, with Ben Allison taking 6-35, and lost by five wickets.

Their only other group-stage loss came against Notts and they finished it in style by scoring 341-7 to beat Derbyshire by three wickets and exceeded 300 again in their final game against Gloucestershire.

Ali Orr (pic below) hit 108 in their semi-final against Middlesex and although they only managed a score of 229-9, Liam Dawson took four wickets as they won by 42 runs.

Jake Libby reaches his century against Essex

Worcestershire started off with a thriller as their opening game against Nottinghamshire ended in a tie via the DLS calculations after Jake Libby and Kashif Ali hit centuries in their score of 312-7.

They then won three in a row, including against Hampshire, before suffering their sole setback of the group stage, a six-wicket loss to Gloucestershire. Three further victories followed, though, to secure top spot in Group A and a home semi-final against Somerset.

Dan Lategan's mature 78 laid the foundation for a score of 275-9 and an inspired new-ball spell by Khurram, Shahzad, which brought him three wickets, ensured Somerset never really got going in reply and he finished with 4-36 as they were bowled out for 141 chasing a revised target of 273 in 38 overs.

  9. Teams and tosspublished at 10:40 BST 20 September

Worcestershire skipper Jake Libby has won the toss and they have asked Hampshire to bat.

Hampshire must manage without all-rounder Liam Dawson, who scored 142 in their semi-final victory over Yorkshire but is away on duty with England's T20 squad in Ireland - but Scott Currie has been released to play in the game.

Worcestershire, meanwhile, have lost Brett D'Oliveira, their leading scorer in the competition with 448 runs, after he suffered an ankle injury in their Championship game against Durham - Gareth Roderick comes in at the top of the order.

Hampshire: Orr, Gubbins, Middleton, Albert, Brown, Mayes, Fuller, Currie, Neal, Abbott, Wheal.

Worcestershire: Roderick, Lategan, Ali, Libby, Jones, Brookes, Cullen, Waite, Taylor, Allison, Shahzad.

It may be styled a 'development competition' these days following the advent of The Hundred, but winning a trophy is always a big deal for any team.

And Hampshire and Worcestershire each have a very big incentive for wanting to leave Trent Bridge with the One-Day Cup in their hands.

It is only seven days since Hampshire suffered the heartbreak of defeat by Somerset in the T20 Blast final, while Worcestershire were relegated from Division One of the County Championship in midweek.
