There it is the change of angle left him a fraction. Kamindu's fine innings is over. That's the wicket England were desperate for.

    What was I saying?

A huge wicket for England and that does change things. Kamindu Mendis' phenomenal innings comes to an end on 113, as he prods outside off stump and edges to Joe Root.

The first shot of uncertainty he's played all day costs him.

But he raises his bat and soaks in the respectable applause from Old Trafford as he departs.

All those yesterday who were fearing for their Day Four tickets.. you're getting your money's worth from them!

Just the single from Chris Woakes' over as England continue their quest for wickets with the new ball.

But the sun is shining, there isn't a load of swing, and it looks like a good day to bat. However, that's probably good news for England because you suspect Sri Lanka need a lot more runs than this to make them really worried.

That was really well struck again. This is a dominating batting display by Chandimal and Kamindu.

Kamindu likes to play it late and England have bowled it a bit too short for him.

    It's a costly over.

Kamindu slashes four more through gully, appearing to hurt Ben Duckett's hand in the process as he struggles with an awkward bounce just in front of him.

He then repeats the cover drive from earlier in the over, which really is a joy to watch.

Regardless of the end result in this Test, he's played magnificently. Sri Lanka have found themselves another exceptional talent, by the looks of things.

Kamindu eased that through the off side, a lovely shot.

    Oh, lovely.

A gift from Gus Atkinson, a floaty half-volley that Kamindu Mendis caresses through the off side for four runs.

Chris Woakes starts with a maiden, as both batters and bowlers settle themselves in after what I imagine was a very tasty Old Trafford lunch.

Bit of swing, but comfortably left alone outside off stump by Dinesh Chandimal.

Right, the players will be back out shortly with Sri Lanka looking to take their lead past 200 and England seeking wickets.

They've only bowled a few overs with the new ball, so there should be opportunities.

While we wait for them all to get ready, treat yourselves to Kamindu Mendis' best shots.

I am loving this. Last night there were lots saying the West Indian side were rubbish & Sri Lanka are pants and we should only take on Australia in Tests and now we are getting in a real fight. I support England & Wales but come on you Lions!

It's also been seriously impressive from Dinesh Chandimal.

He was taken to hospital yesterday after a seriously nasty blow to the thumb from Mark Wood, with scans showing it wasn't broken and so he returned to bat late in the evening.

He made his way to a half-century, the partnership now stands at 101 and they have a lead of 169. You'd still think they're far from being 'safe', because the pitch is still playing pretty well, but they've shown grit, skill and determination and it's been brilliant to watch.

I forgot myself, up until now, but Kamindu Mendis was crucially dropped on 39 yesterday.

That must be England's least successful session of the summer, and it's game on now. It's an unusual feeling - usually Stokes has conjured a wicket himself. It's changed the balance of the match.

Rightly so, all the attention is on Kamindu Mendis.

It's been a sensational innings for so many reasons. Sri Lanka were in all sorts of trouble, trying to grow a decent lead having lost both openers within the first two overs of the innings.

He's only 25, but has already scored three tons in four Tests, and this is his first tour of England - it can't be emphasised enough just how different these conditions are, compared to what he'll be used to in Sri Lanka.

When Kumar Sangakkara is singing his praises, you know you've got a good player on your hands!

    Cheers, Mike.

Well, the morning session certainly belonged to Sri Lanka, and they've been rewarded with bright sunshine beaming down on Old Trafford now.

Let's recap the morning before play resumes in around half an hour's time.

Right, the sun has returned in Manchester and I'm off to soak it up. Can't miss a chance to enjoy a balmy 18 degrees Celsius.

Here's Ffion Wynne to take you through the afternoon.

  20. Lunch - SL 291-6published at 82 overs

A first-ball flick from Chandimal brings the only run of Atkinson's return.

England can't quite get round in time to sneak in another over, that's lunch.

Definitely Sri Lanka's session, with the pair of Chandimal and Mendis adding 87 runs from 22 overs.

    They lead by 169.
