Sri Lanka have shown great application and they hung in there. They adapted and scored runs. England bowled way too straight. The approach from Kamindu and Chandimal fighting the pain barrier and digging in was really good to see. They've shown a lot of heart hanging on in this Test match.

It's a good time to break for England knowing they will take the new ball when they get back.

    A decent 3/4 of a session for Sri Lanka - they've scored 71 runs from just under 18 overs, a run-rate of 3.94.

Dinesh Chandimal is on 57, while Kamindu Mendis is sitting pretty on 90.

Their partnership is now worth 85, and England will be desperate for the new ball - due in two overs time - to break it.

What a morning for Sri Lanka. A very determined effort by Chandimal with his badly injured thumb.

And there we are - the rain is suddenly bucketing down and the players come off with one ball to go of Potts' over.

I suspect we'll be having an early lunch.

Vineet: Mendis is really impressive, doesn't have any obvious weaknesses. His intent is good and fully commits to a shot, whether in attack or defence. Should bat higher in the future, I think!

Chandimal drives Bashir for three to take the Sri Lankan lead past 150.

Meanwhile it's raining where we are, a mile or so from the ground. They have been preparing the hover cover to move on.

Mendis moves into the nineties with a two to point off Potts.

The players will take drinks under some rapidly darkening skies.

Mendis cuts Bashir away through third for two, taking their lead to 146.

Impressive first hour from Sri Lanka, putting on 60 unbeaten runs, and they've come at 4.6rpo - the fastest the visitors have scored in any session this Test. Their chances of victory according to WinViz have risen from 17% to 36% - a crucial partnership that's brought them right back into the contest.

  14. SL 265-6published at 74 overs

Chandimal's single to mid-on is the only run from Potts' over.

We've just had sight of the dark cloud over the top of the Point building - looks ominous.

But it's still sunny at the moment.

England will be desperate for the new ball and know just one wicket could bring two or three more.

Sri Lanka are playing some really good cricket. They're scoring quickly and I'm surprised England haven't used Root yet in the bowling.

    Fifty up for Dinesh Chandimal!

He knocks Bashir's first ball into the off side to reach the landmark - he's recovered well after sustaining that hand injury yesterday.

In fact, more than recovered, he sends the following delivery flying to the mid-wicket ropes after Bashir dragged the ball down.

Sri Lanka have battled hard and haven't folded. They've been under pressure at times and have managed to battle out of it.

  19. SL 259-6published at 72 overs

Five runs from this second Potts over, all looking fairly comfortable out there.

We've been looking at the rain radar - Old Trafford is currently the sunniest it's been all Test, but there might a brief flurry of rain passing over in the next hour.
