Three dot balls to close the over.

That four from Mendis brought up the hundred partnership as well.

Kamindu has looked so composed throughout and he's scored quickly, but never in a rush. He looks so accomplished as a batsman.

A magnificent century for Kamindu. This is his third in Test cricket. He has made the most of it and is giving Sri Lanka a chance in this match. A real fine innings.

  4. 100 runs

100 for Kamindu Mendispublished at 80.3 overs

    SL 290-6

    And there's the century!

Cut wide of point and the ball just about dribbles as far as the boundary rope.

It's his third century in his first four Tests - a sparkling start to his career.

  5. new ball

    SL 286-6published at 80.1 overs

Nope, they're going to take the new ball after all.

Chris Woakes has the first use of the new cherry, and Kamindu Mendis glances him for two to move to 97.

I think England have had enough of the old ball.

Ah, here's Joe Root as well.

Consensus among the TMS team seems to be that with the outfield still wet, England might be biding their time so they can use a dry new ball after lunch.

The Sri Lankan batters take him for four runs, with Root utilising a towel held by the umpire to dry the ball.

Lawrence is a tall man and there's lots going on in his action. He's the kind of bowler that looks like he learned to bowl in his back garden with loads of obstacles.

  9. SL 280-6published at 79 overs

Maybe England were listening to Vic Marks (12:54), Dan Lawrence is going to have a bowl.

His action is a washing machine cycle of swirling limbs that does ultimately finish with a delivery.

Mendis sweeps him down to the fine leg boundary, where Woakes does well to stop the ball going for four.

Where's the logic in restarting at 12:55, just to take lunch at 1:15? Everyone knew a shower was passing through from around 12:15 onwards. Surely the sensible thing would have been to call an early lunch from 12:30? Feels harsh on the Sri Lankans and Mendis in particular who have dug in excellently this morning and earned the right to get through to the break unscathed.

We went off with one ball left of Matty Potts' over.

He sends down a leg-side delivery to Kamindu Mendis, who ducks under it.

I started to get nervous when Sri Lanka's lead reached 80. That's the residual effect of years of Murali trauma. Not sure it will ever leave me.

And here comes the England team, after the 32-minute interval.

The Sri Lanka batters follow them onto the field, resuming on 275-6.

From an English perspective they've could've just tossed the ball to Root or Lawrence. With their unusual style they could've sneaked a wicket.

  15. Play to start at 12:55 BSTpublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 24 August

We've got confirmation - play will start again in five minutes.

There's now two golf carts scooting around with a trailing rope, joining our old friend the Super Sopper. The hover cover is just coming off now.

Lunch was due at 12:15 today, so we'll get twenty minutes of play, probably including a couple of overs with the new ball.

Every time Sri Lanka have had the opportunity to hit the ball to the boundary they have. Their lead is growing. Sri Lanka have maximised every opportunity and I like their mindset. I still think they need another 100. If they can get to around 210/220 that would be a strong position to be in.

The umpires are out in the middle taking a look.

It's certainly getting brighter in Manchester - I suspect we won't be waiting much longer.

A bit of news - they're removing the plastic sheeting covering the square. The rain appears to have abated.

The Super Sopper is making its way around the outfield.

England won't be too nervous as the pitch hasn't deteriorated. If Sri Lanka can get another hundred the chase won't be easy.
