This has been a really good first 50 minutes for Sri Lanka. England will definitely be eyeing up that new ball.

I mentioned yesterday how good Kamindu is to watch. Looks like a classic Test match batsman in the making. An England fan, but as a cricket lover I really hope he gets a ton.

  4. SL 249-6published at 70 overs

A first change of the day for England as Matty Potts replaces Gus Atkinson. The Surrey seamer had conceded 25 runs from his last two overs.

Just two runs from this one.

England need to be patient - but they need to get cracking!

There isn't a lot of bounce on this pitch and England are having to work hard to get those wickets.

  7. SL 247-6published at 69 overs

Chandimal gets a boundary of his own, pulling the final ball of Woakes' over.

This has been a decent start to the morning for Sri Lanka, they've added 43 from nine overs.

Kamindu is doing well. He's got a simple technique and looks really assured.

That was really well driven by Kamindu. He forced Ollie Pope to follow it all the way and it just creeped onto the boundary sponge.

  10. SL 241-6published at 68 overs

That's some lovely batting from Kamindu Mendis.

He picks up three through point, then closes Atkinson's over with consecutive fours - driving through the covers, then pulling through backward square.

    He's onto 75.

Was Jamie Smith's century the first by an England player born in the 21st century? And how many Test match centuries have been compiled in Tests across all nations by players born in 2000 and after?

Not to get England fans twitching, but Old Trafford has the lowest fourth-innings average (21.70) of any venue in England across the last decade.

  13. SL 229-6published at 67 overs

Woakes reels it back with a maiden to Chandimal.

His last ball keeps low, scooting under the bat, he doesn't make the stumps.

He was dismissed by a ball like that in the first innings.

No real alarms Sri Lanka are going along absolutely fine, they've got their tempo spot on. Looking to be aggressive and are playing it nicely. They are running well between the wickets and making England think a bit.

A fortuitous boundary for Chandimal. A pretty horrid shot that deviated back in.

  16. SL 229-6published at 66 overs

A high-scoring over off Atkinson, as Sri Lanka's batters take him for 13 runs.

An ugly shot from Chandimal just about makes the mid-wicket boundary - I'm not sure the England fielders spotted where the ball had gone.

He finds the boundary again with a pull that just about beats Shoaib Bashir to the ropes.

It seems like things have just slowed down as the bowlers have got warmed up and ready for the day.

Please can we acknowledge the sunshine at Old Trafford whilst everywhere else is rained off across the country? We always get people whinging that England should never play here again when it rains, but it never gets mentioned when it's the other way round!

On Sky Sports, Sri Lanka greats Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene say that batting in England isn't about playing straight, but playing square - don't get squared up, less vulnerable to movement, playing late etc. Kamindu Mendis has only played four Tests obviously, but 58% of his runs v pace have come through point - the most of any player in the SL squad.

  20. SL 216-6published at 65 overs

Kamindu Mendis takes two through point, slashing Woakes' ball just past the fielder there.

The only runs of the over, Mendis moves to 62.
