  2. 'I take every innings as separately as I can'published at 18:42 British Summer Time 22 June

England number three Ollie Pope speaking to Sky Sports: "I know what this pitch is like. It's a quick outfield with nice consistent bounce, it can swing a bit too, so playing nice and square play with the swing too.

"I take every innings as separately as I can, take confidence from this innings, hopefully get some in the second as we chase and then draw a line under it.

"I think the way KL Rahul played tonight, getting him out tomorrow is going to be crucial. We back ourselves to chase a steady score."

  3. 'The game is in the balance, but I am feeling good'published at 18:39 British Summer Time 22 June

India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, speaking to BBC TMS, on India's position in the game: "The game is in the balance. We have to bat well. The wicket is a little bit paced so it will be an interesting game to come."

On his body: "It is feeling good. It is a little bit colder here than India. I am feeling fresh and good so hopefully good things will follow."

On India's dropped catches: "I like to enjoy my time on the field so I always smile. Nobody is dropping catches purposefully and sometimes the cold makes it difficult to catch. I try not to let if affect me and move forwards quickly."

On how well supported he feels: "We are heading towards a transition with our bowlers, some are playing here for the first time. Sometimes new bowlers take time to adjust but we share the experience and people will slowly learn.

"At this moment our aim is to put on as many runs as we can."

If it's only 200 then I think England would be delighted, John. I think it all depends on whether the pitch starts to misbehave and to what extent... oh, and Jasprit Bumrah.

How many is too many to chase? 200-250 used to be about the mark but now I have absolutely no idea.

  6. 'I have listened to too many voices in the past, so I focus on myself'published at 18:32 British Summer Time 22 June

England number three Ollie Pope, speaking to BBC Test Match Special, on his performance and Test century: "I was really happy. It was annoying to not kick on today but it was a good challenge yesterday with the new ball."

On his start in the game: "It was something I have gotten better at. I have worked hard at it and was happy with how I went out there. We know it it a fast-scoring ground so you don't need too much power to score runs."

On Jasprit Bumrah: "He is a fantastic bowler. For me it is realising what his main mode of dismissal is so it was about protecting the stumps. It is a long series and I am sure he will keep bowling good spells."

On his confidence: "I want to keep putting on runs after runs. To get a good score early is pleasing so I am enjoying it and we want to crack on tomorrow."

On England's position: "That late wicket at the end puts us in an even position. We know we have runs to chase but if we can keep playing as we are, we know we can put together a good score."

On the talk of him playing at three: "It is important to cut that stuff out. It is not making me better so I try to focus on my own game. I have listened to too many voices in the past but it is hard to avoid it in this day and age."

England do back themselves in a chase but this week they've got to contend with a master at work in Jasprit Bumrah.

The India fast bowler was superb in completing his 14th Test five-for, finishing with figures of 5-83.

England will certainly be the happier of the two sides. Their belief in their ability to knock off a total is unprecedented.

While we're on the England bowlers, it's worth pointing out that this is Brydon Carse's first home Test.

He was mightily impressive over the winter and his spell with the new ball this evening suggests he is very capable of producing that form in England, too.

The ball to remove Yashasvi Jaiswal was a beauty.

Ben Stokes has got five wickets in a match for the first time since England played India at Edgbaston three years ago. This is his 29th Test since then and his second five-wicket-match in his last 48 Tests.

A long way to go in this series, Chris, so there's every chance.

From an England perspective, they'll hope to have Gus Atkinson back at some stage and possibly even Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, too.

That would give the bowling attack a very different feel.

Plenty of quality batsman around in this series. It’s the bowling that’s suspect - Bumrah the exception by far, and Stokes with his moments of magic. Will we be saying something different by the end of the series?

So another entertaining day of Test cricket that saw England get to within six of India's first innings total.

That was largely thanks to a brilliant 99 from Harry Brook, who had some luck but also played some truly remarkable shots before falling one run shy of a first international century on his home ground of Headingley.

Jasprit Bumrah completed a thoroughly deserved five-for - his 14th in Tests - before India moved to 90-2 in their second innings with KL Rahul unbeaten on 47.

The tourists lead by 96 and this first Test is still very nicely poised with two days remaining.

India will be looking back at their fielding performance thinking 'What if?' You have to say they are still favourites.

England can chase well at Headingley though so they will still fancy themselves.

That suddenly came out of nowhere. Ben Stokes is holding his hands up as if to say 'What's going on here?'

  16. Close of play - Ind 90-2published at 23.5 overs

    Close!

Shoaib Bashir so nearly finds the edge with a ball that goes on with the arm to beat Shubman Gill.

But then with one ball left in the over, the umpires decide enough is enough.

All very sudden but the rain has got heavier and because we are past the scheduled close of 18:00 BST, that is stumps.

Jofra Archer is out for an entertaining 31 from 34 balls.

If Durham take the final Sussex wicket in the next nine balls they would bat tonight, potentially giving us a look at Archer bowling this evening in his first red-ball match for four years.

Too straight from Ben Stokes to end the over and the ball bounces off Shubman Gill's thigh pad for a leg bye.

England hurry round to try and beat the rain. I think we're all good for now.

Shubman Gill is going out there with a bit of intent. The way England can get him out is by getting the ball to nip back in to the pads.

    Beauty from Ben Stokes.

The ball rears up from back of a length and moves away from Shubman Gill.

Does too much, really, but signs of life in the pitch in these conditions.
