With only the odd ball misbehaving, it has still been a superb day for batting. The PitchViz rating for the day is 3.5/10 (lower = easier for batting).

Of the 400 full days of play in England where ball tracking data is available, today’s rating is 33rd, putting it easily in the top 10% of easy batting days in the modern era of Test cricket.

Shubman Gill is in at four and the India skipper is off the mark with a boundary first ball.

Short and wide from Stokes and Gill helps it up and over the slip. One bounce for four.

What a gift. Ben Stokes has broken through from round the wicket. It was a casual shot and Sai Sudharsan won't be happy with that.

That's what Stokes does, he makes things happen.

Can England get Rishabh Pant out there tonight?

'What a gift!' - Crawley takes catch at mid-wicket to dismiss Sudharsan for 30

Swings onto the pads again but this one is clipped straight to mid-wicket!

Sai Sudharsan had put a near-identical delivery away for four the previous delivery but this time he chips it into the hands of Zak Crawley.

A gift for the home side.

Not how he necessarily planned it but Ben Stokes does it again for England.

"No!" shouts Ben Stokes as he drifts one onto the pads of Sai Sudharsan.

The left-hander gratefully clips it through backward square leg for four to move to 30.

Up at Chester-le-Street, Jofra Archer doesn't look that bothered about having a bowl tonight. He's moved into 17 in his first red-ball innings since May 2021.

Batting without a sponsor and at number nine for Sussex against Durham, he got off the mark with an edge off Matthew Potts but has since played a lovely pull shot and a classical drive.

    Sussex are 286-8.

If there final two wickets were to fall immediately then Sussex would have five overs to bowl tonight - potentially three of those for Archer.

KL Rahul produces the most lovely drives, every one seems better than the one before. It's perfect.

    Glorious from KL Rahul.

A cover drive right out of the MCC manual.

It was a half-volley from Josh Tongue and he put it away superbly.

KL Rahul is so important as a batter, he is so calming. These India youngsters have so much talent, but they will have their moments of panic so Rahul's experience just brings that calm.

Just one from Ben Stokes' latest.

He drags KL Rahul forward with a very full, swinging delivery that the India batter nearly drags onto his stump.

The skipper was England's most threatening bowler in the first innings and there are a couple of signs he might be the man to find the breakthrough here as well.

Duckett had it the first time, but in the end he grassed it. You can see the disappointment on his face.

    Down it goes.

Wide ball from Josh Tongue but Sai Sudharsan gets a thick edge as he goes after it.

It goes straight to Ben Duckett at gully but he just didn't pick it up. The ball bounces out of his hands and he can't take it at the second attempt either.

India have done well after the early wicket. I thought England might have got two or three more quick ones but the batters have done well.

  17. Ind 67-1published at 17 overs

Another quick single but this one is far riskier from KL Rahul.

He has to put in the dive and it would have been tight but the throw was off the mark anyway.

Ben Stokes switches to round the wicket to the left-handed Sai Sudharsan but is frustrated with himself for straying onto the pads and giving away an easy single.

Good running from India as KL Rahul drops the ball into the leg side and calls Sai Sudharsan through for a quick single.

It's the only run from the Josh Tongue over but this has been an impressive partnership in tricky conditions and it's now worth 49.

Despite losing a wicket and scoring at a far quicker rate than in the first innings (4.08 runs per over v 3.00 runs per over), India’s batters are doing so with far more control.

    India after 12 overs:

    • 1st inns - 36-0 - 26% false shots
    • 2nd inns - 49-1 - 15% false shots
