KL Rahul is such a strong driver of the ball.

  2. Ind 45-1published at 10 overs

    Top shot from KL Rahul.

Very full from Carse and the India opener shows it the full face of the bat, middling it back past the bowler.

Through the covers now. All timing. Glorious. You don't have to run for those.

Chris Woakes has not quite hit his straps with this new ball in the second innings.

His pace is down (79.4 mph v 82.3 mph) and he hasn’t been challenging the stumps nearly as much in this second innings (4% v 13%).

  4. Ind 37-1published at 9.2 overs

    An all-run four!

Nice timing off the pads from KL Rahul and Josh Tongue only just gets to the ball before the rope.

However, his flick back gives Shoaib Bashir another chase and the India batters scamper through for the fourth.

The uncertainty of how to play in the third innings is what leads to some team's downfall. You are often thinking, should we bat time or be more aggressive and get runs?

Great bowling from England here. After watching their first innings where they were all over the place, I think these two openers are finding their line and length nicely. Good to keep the debutant quiet. Seems like I am the only one who is scared after watching him in the IPL this year

Re Anon at 16:35. I think doubting a man who won the orange cap at the IPL and averaged 54 in the competition is not very wise. Furthermore, he averages 40 in first class cricket so I think Sudharsan deserves a shot at 3 as much as anyone in the India squad.

  7. Ind 33-1published at 9 overs

    Sudharsan 16, Rahul 12

Soft hands from Sai Sudharsan and it means an edge off Chris Woakes goes quickly to ground, wide of the slips for four.

Woakes had beaten him with a full ball in the channel early in the over and then again to end it - but the left-hander is playing nicely so far in just his second Test innings.

  8. Ind 27-1published at 8 overs

Lovely timing from Sai Sudharsan and he gets three through the covers from what was little more than a defensive push.

India add a couple more singles to make it five from the Brydon Carse over. This is what the tourists need after that early wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Chris Woakes may need a little bit more cover in the cover region to allow for that fuller length and to make sure he is not going for too many runs.

  10. Ind 22-1published at 7 overs

Another over goes by with just a single from it.

No real scares for either India batter in the over but they're remaining very watchful in overcast conditions.

It does look a little brighter than it was when the session started, though.

KL Rahul is a very good leaver of the ball. He is very different to Ben Duckett as an opener, a lot more traditional.

Brydon Carse fizzes another one past Sai Sudharsan's edge to start the over.

He's enjoying bowling to the left-handers but a single means he is faced by the right-handed KL Rahul for the last four balls of the over.

No run from those and England are doing a good job of limiting India's scoring chances.

A little bit more shape on offer for Woakes. If he gets that pitched up a little bit more, it might bring him into the game.

Surprised to see Sudharsan batting 3 for India the summer after he was batting 6/7 for Surrey and not scoring many.

Chris Woakes does go a little fuller to end this over and finds a bit of swing.

Nothing extravagant and KL Rahul intentionally plays inside the line to see out a maiden over.

England have gone a lot shorter with the new ball in the second innings here with an average length of 8.4m, compared with 6.5m in the first innings.

As a result they are finding significantly less swing but are finding more seam movement than they did by this point in the first innings.

Brydon Carse has opened the bowling 18 times in his first-class career. He has only taken two wickets in his opening spells, so Jaiswal makes it his third.

Really good, probing over from Brydon Carse.

He challenges the left-handers from round the wicket, removing Yashasvi Jaiswal and making it tough for Sai Sudharsan.

  19. Ind 20-1published at 3.2 overs

Sai Sudharsan is off the pair with his first runs in Test cricket.

Fuller delivery, homing in on off stump and the ball comes off the outside half of the left-hander's bat and along the ground, wide of the slips for four.

Huge relief for the India Test debutant, I'm sure.

That is just the start England needed. They have got rid of the dangerous Jaiswal.
