Summary

  1. Eng 214-3published at 49.5 overs

Harry Brook continues where he left off at the end of day two - and that's not a good thing for England.

A very loose drive from the Yorkshireman as Krishna tempts him with a ball in the channel outside off. Play and a miss.

    That's more like it, Harry!

Too short, wide and hammer away through point for four by Brook.

  2. Eng 210-3published at 49.1 overs

Full ball on the stumps to start from Prasidh Krishna and Ollie Pope nudges it to square leg for a single.

    England are up and running.

Right then, after a warm applause for David Lawrence, the players make their way out to the middle.

Ollie Pope is unbeaten on 100, Harry Brook is yet to score and Prasidh Krishna is at the top of his mark ready to bowl the first over of day three.

I'd be stunned if it's anyone but Jasprit Bumrah bowling from the other end.

Everyone loved Syd. I'm so glad that Glos gave him a last hurrah with the Pink4Syd match on Friday.

    Alex - Chelt

As a nine year old in 1988, my first cricket memories are watching the West Indies terrorise England and being in awe at their bowling - I will still argue with anyone that Ambrose is the best I have seen. Then, late that summer, Syd Lawrence played against Sri Lanka and I remember thinking we had a bowler who could bowl like the West Indies. The only difference seemed to be he smiled while doing it! Sad loss.

    Rob from Warwick.

Such sad news. Syd was not just a wonderful bowler but a brilliant club owner. Dojo’s in Bristol for those that know! Let’s hope the lads can do him proud!

Saturday at Headingley. Fancy dress. A group of clergymen took their place on the Western Terrace.

Maybe there was a universe where Ollie Pope joined them in watching from the sidelines. Maybe his place was never under any serious threat from Jacob Bethell.

If it had taken a leap of faith from Ben Stokes to retain his vice-captain at number three for the first Test against India, then Pope picked the perfect time to play the grateful disciple.

Ollie Pope put a lot of things to bed yesterday. He was the anchor, and in those conditions as well, that was the most impressive thing. Watching Bumrah was a sight to behold and Pope managed to negotiate that really well.

He lived life on the edge a couple of times, but mentally and physically he fought his way through it.

There was one man who managed to battle through for England.

Ollie Pope was in the spotlight coming into this Test with the debate over whether he should make way for Jacob Bethell raging.

But he responded in the perfect manner, looking assured from ball one as he went on to reach his ninth Test hundred...

No doubt Lawrence would have approved of the fearsome display of fast bowling we saw from Jasprit Bumrah yesterday.

I'm hoping England put in a good performance today in memory of 'Syd', but with the forecast looking ominous, England may struggle to get the deficit down to double figures.

  12. 'He thrilled crowds with his pace and passion'published at 10:46 British Summer Time

England and Wales Cricket Board chair Richard Thompson has paid tribute to David 'Syd' Lawrence, who has died aged 61.

Thompson said: "David ‘Syd’ Lawrence was a true trailblazer of English cricket and a man of immense courage, character, and compassion.

"His impact on the game extended far beyond the boundary ropes.

"As a fast bowler, he thrilled crowds with his pace and passion. As a leader and advocate, he broke barriers and inspired change, becoming a powerful voice for inclusion and representation in our sport.

"Even in the face of his illness, David showed extraordinary strength and dignity, continuing to uplift others with his resilience and spirit. He leaves behind a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who love cricket.

"Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire cricketing community at this time."

Every ball of Syd's was like an explosion of energy. He never left anything out there and he was so proud to be picked for England.

I toured in 1984-85 with Syd and he was a dear man. He was such fun on the field, always had a smile between every ball. He was generous and that's what I will always remember him for.

He was a great man Syd. A fierce competitor and a sight to behold coming in with the ball in his hand. He had power and determination and left nothing out there on the field.

He was a great friend of mine. An intimidating sight but with a warm heart and a great sense of humour. He would fill the room with smiles and laughter and stories.

Some sad news to bring you this morning. Former England and Gloucestershire fast bowler David 'Syd' Lawrence has died at the age of 61.

Lawrence, the first British-born black cricketer to represent England, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), external last year.

He was appointed MBE in the King's Birthday Honours earlier this month after raising money and awareness of the condition.

Lawrence played five Test matches for England and took 625 wickets in 280 matches during a 16-year career at Gloucestershire.

"'Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field and no more so than to his family who were with him when he passed," said a family statement announcing his death.

Right then, it wouldn't be the Test summer without a bit of a weather watch.

And after a brief rain delay on day two, the forecast for today is not too clever either, unfortunately.

BBC Weather suggests there is the potential for a few showers throughout the day and it does not look good from 17:00 BST onwards.

Still, these things can change and, with some luck, the downpours could miss Headingley.

Crucially, it is dry in Leeds at the moment.

We're back as the first Test between England and India continues - and day three has a lot to live up to!

After India dominated on day one, England hit back yesterday despite a wonderful century from Rishabh Pant and some electrifying bowling from Jasprit Bumrah.

Ollie Pope showed just why the home side had stuck with him at number three with a superb hundred and he'll resume this morning with England 209-3, still trailing by 262 runs.

    A big first session awaits...
