A round of County Championship games has started today and let's have a quick look at the England interest in a couple of games.

Jofra Archer isn't bowling at Chester-le-Street, with Sussex 91-2 against Durham.

Jacob Bethell isn't batting at Edgbaston, with Somerset 71-0 against Warwickshire, although the players did come off during his fourth over because of rain.

    So there you go.

While we wait for the players to return, why not enjoy Harry Brook bringing up his half-century?

With Stokes' relative malaise with the bat but prowess with the ball (and provided he stays injury-free), is there an argument for Stokes playing purely as a bowler, hence solving the Bethell conundrum?

Hello, hello - and thanks Sam.

WinViz still has England as favourites here, which strikes me as optimistic, but then I only have a GCSE in Statistics, and an unremarkable one at that.

Right, plenty to get stuck into in that session and who better to go through it all - and no doubt plenty more besides - than Mike Peter.

He's here to take you through the afternoon session.

England are chopping that deficit down, but it feels evenly poised at the moment. A fascinating afternoon session awaits.

  8. Lunch - Eng 327-5published at 77 overs

    Smith 29, Brook 57

That's lunch. England add 118 runs in the session for the loss of two wickets so they probably shade that one.

Another enthralling session of Test cricket.

Harry Brook has made his 20th fifty-plus score in only 26 Tests and the home side are now within 144 runs of matching India's first-innings total.

    Cheteshwar Pujara
India batter on BBC Test Match Special

Bumrah is trying a little bit too hard to get a wicket before lunch at the moment.

There isn't a lot of swing, even with the new ball.

  10. Eng 326-5published at 76.4 overs

Slightly leg side from Bumrah to start the over and the ball flicks off Harry Brook's thigh pad and away for four leg byes.

Nice timing from Brook then brings him three through the leg-side to bring up the fifty partnership. Two balls left in the session.

  11. Eng 319-5published at 76 overs

England deal in singles, taking three of them in total from the Ravindra Jadeja over.

The left-arm spinner is quick through his over as ever so there will be time for one more from Jasprit Bumrah before lunch.

Jamie Smith is very well balanced. He is reading Bumrah's swing very well which is not something many people can do.

A beautiful looking drive, the timing and the placement. When you play a shot like that against Bumrah you feel it is a win.

  14. Eng 316-5published at 75 overs

    Smith 27, Brook 52

    Top shot!

Full from Jasprit Bumrah and Jamie Smith punches it beautifully through the covers for four.

    Fantastic timing.

Jasprit Bumrah almost had a wicket with his first ball. Jamie Smith didn't expect that to go in the air but he hit it so hard.

  16. Eng 310-5published at 74.1 overs

Close to a wicket first ball back for Jasprit Bumrah!

Angled in at the stumps, Jamie Smith tries to work to leg and gets a leading edge that drops just short of Shardul Thakur.

India will want a brief burst before lunch to see if they can take something into the interval.

It looks like they have their wish as the ball is being checked and changed.

  18. Eng 310-5published at 74 overs

India have been persistent in their requests for the ball to be changed... and finally, they get their wish.

The ball does not go through the rings and so they will get a different one that looks to be roughly 74 overs old.

I don't think it's any coincidence that Jasprit Bumrah is coming back on now there is a different ball to bowl with...

England will be aiming for 400-450 at this stage. It is important to build a partnership and look to achieve small goals.

They need to remember that there is a new ball soon and when Bumrah gets that, it will be a challenging time.

  20. Eng 307-5published at 73 overs

    Smith 21, Brook 51

Another over in which Jamie Smith keeps the fielders busy with some crisp drives.

Eventually, he finds a gap but only for a single to deep point. It's a good field setting from Shubman Gill to keep the England man tied down.
