'Remarkable' Brook makes half century as England chase down India

Harry Brook goes through to his 12th Test half-century - to go with eight tons.

He timed the ball superbly through mid-wicket the delivery following the drop, that got him three and then a single to long-on last ball takes him to his fifty.

The Yorkshireman has got there is decent time on his home ground, too, just the 65 balls.

Jadeja's reaction suggests there was definitely an outside edge. That could prove very expensive.

  4. dropped catch

Brook dropped on 46published at 70.1 overs

    Eng 300-5

    Let off for Harry Brook!

He pushes forward at a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja, there's a hint of turn and that's enough to find the shoulder of the bat.

The ball was rising and Rishabh Pant can't hold on stood up to the stumps. The ball looped up but in the wrong direction for the slip fielder to get to it.

    Cheteshwar Pujara
India batter on BBC Test Match Special

This is Shardul Thakur's first time bowling from the pavilion end. He looks a lot more confident from this end than he did yesterday.

  6. Eng 300-5published at 70 overs

After two sweetly-timed drives find fielders, Jamie Smith skips down and whips the ball between mid-wicket and mid-on for four.

Lovely shot and he then gets two with a mistimed pull. That ends the Shardul Thakur over and brings up the 300 for England.

    Trail by 177

Jamie Smith takes a single to deep point and that's the only run from Ravindra Jadeja's latest.

A little under 25 minutes until lunch with this Test still very much in the balance.

The wind looks to be getting up at Headingley but no sign of rain yet. We can only hope it stays that way.

Last three wickets have been batsmen errors and they’ll be disappointed. Still if the last 5 can eek out 100-120 runs then it’s still game on. Good, tough Test cricket.

    Smith 12, Brook 46

Another firm shot through the covers from Jamie Smith but this time it doesn't bring him a boundary.

Good work from Ravindra Jadeja on the rope saves a run.

Smith completely played around it, but he must have had a feeling because he reviewed it instantly.

  11. Not outpublished at 68.4 overs

    Eng 290-5

It was going down leg. Cheers from the home crowd as umpire Gaffaney has to overturn his decision.

Jamie Smith advanced and somehow missed the full toss, he'll be as annoyed about that as he will be relieved that ball-tracking shows it was swinging past his leg stump.

He's given him. He had a long think and it was reviewed straight away by Smith.

Has Shardul Thakur removed Jamie Smith with a full toss?!

Given lbw on the field. Is it missing leg? Smith was quick to review.

    Crunched!

Short and wide from Shardul Thakur early in his first over of the day - and that's just what Jamie Smith wants early in his innings.

A freebie that he thumps through the off side for four.

The PitchViz rating for this session is down at just 2.4 (lower = easier for batting).

Of the 180 sessions of Headingley Test cricket we have ball tracking data for, this has been the second lowest PitchViz rating in history - England will be very disappointed to have given India two wickets in this session.

Brook got into a great position quickly. He pressed forward and got on the back foot, that's one of his trademark shots.

  17. Eng 286-5published at 68 overs

There is infinitely more energy from India in the field after that wicket of Ben Stokes. Rishabh Pant has found his voice again behind the stumps with the tourists sensing this is a crucial period in the match.

Harry Brook is still there for England, though, and relieves some of the pressure by pulling a drag-down from Ravindra Jadeja in front of square for four.

India's middle order made two centuries. You feel it is now up to Brook and Smith to do the same otherwise the match goes to India.

Siraj has found good rhythm. He was a bit wayward yesterday but he has bowled a great over against Jamie Smith and put doubt in his mind.

  20. Eng 282-5published at 67 overs

Mohammed Siraj has his hands over his face in disbelief.

It's a superb delivery from the India fast bowler and he finds the inside edge as Jamie Smith tentatively prods forward.

That could so easily have ricocheted onto the stumps but instead it runs down to the fine leg boundary for four.
