Pant throws away ball in anger after umpire refuses ball change

What a shot from Harry Brook!

He skips down to Mohammed Siraj, who sees him coming, bangs it in short but is still hit for four as Brook adjusts.

The England right-hander just opens up and lifts the ball over the slip cordon to the deep third boundary.

Meanwhile, India want the ball changed and are twice turned down by the umpires.

Rishabh Pant throws the ball down in disgust after umpire Reiffel's second refusal to change the ball, drawing some jeers from the Headingley crowd.

Brook's plan makes sense to me. Against a relatively new captain, especially if you can take on his best bowler, be assertive!

Can’t see why people question Brook. Absolute monster of a batsman and him attacking the India attack is a smart tactic as long as Stokes tries to play the anchor role. Get behind your team England fans!

Jadeja is continuously firing it into Ben Stokes and trying to trap him on the back foot. It would be good to see Stokes get a little bit more forward to him.

  4. Eng 255-4published at 60 overs

Harry Brook finds the gap on the leg side for two off Ravindra Jadeja before easing one into the covers.

The over ends with Ben Stokes trying something a bit more ambitious, getting well outside off and trying to paddle-sweep.

No joy this time as he misses and the ball thuds into his pad.

Beautifully timed from Stokes. That is him at his best just a little press forward, nice straight bat.

Brooks approach is giving Stokes the time to get himself in. He's 4 off 30, but there's not as much pressure building as the scoreboard is still flowing freely.

A Stokes/Brookes partnership has the same feel as a Flintoff/Pietersen. The whole country is hoping it happens.

Got to love sport. Brook takes Bumrah on this morning and people love it. Last night straight up in the air and people would have hammered him!

There is a great battle between Stokes and Siraj, they are both big competitors. Stokes is trying to get some rhythm out there but it will be hard for him considering this is his first knock in 2025.

'That is right up there!' - Stokes hits lovely driving shot towards long off for four

England have got through Jasprit Bumrah's first spell of the day as he is replaced by Mohammed Siraj.

Gorgeous shot to end the over. A crisp straight drive from Ben Stokes that reaches the boundary in an instant.

There has been a combined average lateral movement (swing + seam) of just 1.0° this morning. This is comfortably the lowest for any session of the match so far - England batters are going to look to capitalise on the relatively placid period of play.

Ravindra Jadeja gets one to turn sharply in to the left-hander Ben Stokes.

There's a puff of dust when the ball pitches and then an inside edge from Stokes that goes through his legs but wide of the the backward short leg fielder.

The England captain moves to four from 27 balls. A very considered start.

This is a good move bringing Jadeja into the attack. Harry Brook will enjoy this as he likes playing against the spin.

Ravindra Jadeja is on to replace Prasidh Krishna.

It’s important to have someone like Brook who wants to be positive, we can’t spend the entire series defending against Bumrah.

Stokes is just trying to see off Bumrah. It will get easier when he gets out of the attack, but it's the right approach from the skipper.

Krishna was an interesting choice because he didn't bowl overly well yesterday but he did well to get the huge wicket of Pope.

    Maiden over from Jasprit Bumrah.

The India fast bowler tempts Ben Stokes with a wide delivery that the England left-hander chases.

A lose shot and he'll be relieved not to have got anything on it.

You know cricket is well and truly in the swing of things when people are questioning the logic of the number 2 ranked batter in the world when he's playing exactly the way that has got him to that ranking.

    Thomas

Even though Brook has been hitting boundary after boundary here, despite his average, I think he could go out just as Pope did with a nick in behind. All it takes is one shot.

Highest batting average v Pace, coming down the track in Test cricket (Since 2006):

    • Ollie Pope - 109.00
    • Harry Brook - 108.00

Drive on the up from Harry Brook. Beautiful.

He makes it look so simple and the ball races away through extra cover for four.

I've been surprised to see a few questioning the world number two Test batter this morning but he's going along very nicely so far on day three.
