We can't remember a day quite like this one in the recent past.

No play was possible in eight matches because of a combination of high winds, which made removing the covers dangerous, and rain - but at least there was action in the big one between Surrey and Notts.

The 2022, 2023 and 2024 champions had very much the better of the day, despite losing Dom Sibley late on, leaving the Notts bowlers a lot of work to do to get their side back into the game,

We will be back tomorrow for what we hope will be a busier day of action around the grounds. Join us from 10:00.

  2. 'Surrey will be happy with their day's work'published at 18:27 BST 15 September

    Surrey 43-1 v Notts 231 - close

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

Surrey have had a good first day. The key thing was winning the toss and bowling but they bowled very well.

They'll be happy with their day's work but Notts will say to themselves 'come back tomorrow and bowl the way Surrey have today'.

  3. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 18:20 BST 15 September

    Surrey 43-1 v Notts 231

That'll do us for the opening day of this top-of-the-table meeting with Surrey on top.

Matt Fisher's fifth career five-wicket haul helped them fire out Notts after winning the toss and bowling, while Ben Slater once again got to 50 for the visitors without going on to make a big score.

Dillon Pennington removed Dom Sibley before the close to give Notts some encouragement for when they come back tomorrow.

Surrey lead the table by four points thanks to taking maximum bowling points today.

  4. 'Wasn't the best delivery but Sibley is out'published at 18:19 BST 15 September

    Surrey 42-1 v Notts 231

    Roland Butcher
Former England batter on BBC Radio Surrey

It wasn't the best delivery and Sibley walked across and tried to withdraw the bat.

It's run off the face of the bat and he's so, so disappointed.

The Nottinghamshire bowlers are delighted! They've got the break through,

  5. Postpublished at 18:16 BST 15 September

    Surrey 42-1 v Notts 231

Dillon Pennington has the wicket Notts so badly wanted before the close.

Nightwatchman Tom Lawes fails to get the single needed and skipper Rory Burns will have to deal with the final over of the day.

    A huge bonus for Notts.

Dom Sibley gets an edge almost off the bottom of the bat and Dillon Pennington makes the breakthrough.

Tom Lawes is sent in as the Surrey nightwatchman.

  7. Postpublished at 18:10 BST 15 September

    Surrey 41-0 v Notts 231

Two overs remain in the day.

I would say you can check out all the scores from around the country on our cricket page but The Oval is the only place we've had play today because of rain and high winds.

The deficit here is now below 200 runs, helped by five wides in that Josh Tongue over followed by a wide half-volley which was cracked away by Dom Sibley.

  8. Postpublished at 18:06 BST 15 September

    Surrey 30-0 v Notts 231

Dillon Pennington replaces Brett Hutton who had bowled six overs for nine runs.

It's a change of ends for the former Worcestershire man but there's just nothing happening for the bowlers.

  9. 'Burns and Sibley have played well'published at 18:02 BST 15 September

    Surrey 27-0 v Notts 231

Rory Burns and Dom Sibley have played pretty well here and Brett Hutton's bowled nicely, he's gone past the edge.

Like Ben Slater and Haseeb Hameed, you've got two very experienced opening pairs in this game.

  10. Postpublished at 18:01 BST 15 September

    Surrey 28-0 v Notts 231

    Another over from Josh Tongue.

Rory Burns squeezes out a single - it's been all very comfortable for the Surrey skipper so far.

That's the only run from the 12th over of the innings.

    The deficit is 203 runs.

Brett Hutton gets one to leave Dom Sibley and it takes off through to Kyle Verreynne which rather wakes everyone up.

    It's a maiden over.

Five more to bowl before we can head off for a bit of dinner.

  12. Postpublished at 17:54 BST 15 September

    Surrey 27-0 v Notts 231

A first play and miss from Rory Burns in Josh Tongue's second over.

The next one is full on Burns' pads and he gratefully accepts the chance to flick it away for four runs.

A big lbw shout to end the over but it's around the wicket to a left-hander so it's asking a lot - too much says umpire Nigel Llong.

  13. Postpublished at 17:50 BST 15 September

    Surrey 22-0 v Notts 231

More grunting from Brett Hutton but his fifth ball is loose and Rory Burns cuts it away for his first boundary of the innings.

We still have sunshine at The Oval but the shadows are lengthening.

Seven overs remain in the day.

  14. Postpublished at 17:49 BST 15 September

    Surrey 17-0 v Notts 231

Here comes Josh Tongue for his first stint of this Surrey innings.

Again there isn't anything to seriously threaten the home side.

We saw this in the Notts innings when it was only once the lacquer went off the ball we saw it trouble the batsmen.

Two runs come from the over.

  15. Postpublished at 17:47 BST 15 September

If you have been with us over the past few hours, you will know that there was no play in eight of the nine games which should have begun today - mostly because of high winds.

As far as we can discover, there are no specific playing regulations relating to wind, but umpires have a duty of care for participants and spectators.

We would assume that also applies to groundstaff who have to try and remove large covers in beyond blustery conditions, which seems to have been an issue at a number of grounds.

  16. Postpublished at 17:42 BST 15 September

    Surrey 15-0 v Notts 231

Just the one run from Brett Hutton's latest over who is getting it to noticeably wobble in the air.

    The deficit is 216 runs.

  17. Postpublished at 17:38 BST 15 September

    Surrey 14-0 v Notts 231

Dom Sibley dreamily times one off his legs for four runs to open Dillon Pennington's latest over.

That's the first boundary of the innings off the bat.

Sibley then drives at one outside off stump but gets away with it.

Five runs from the over with 10 to go in the day.

  18. 'A good day for Surrey so far'published at 17:37 BST 15 September

    Surrey 9-0 v Notts 231

    Roland Butcher
Former England batter on BBC Radio Surrey

It's been a good day for Surrey so far having dismissed Notts for 231 after a bit of a rearguard action got them up to that total and now suddenly Surrey are having to bat out the rest of the day.

  19. Postpublished at 17:34 BST 15 September

    Surrey 9-0 v Notts 231

A big shout for lbw from Brett Hutton as Dom Sibley looks to work one into the leg side.

Sibley's a long way forward and there's a shake of the head from the umpire.

    Hutton completes a maiden.

  20. Postpublished at 17:30 BST 15 September

    Surrey 9-0 v Notts 231

Dillon Pennington serves up one down leg side to open the fourth over - it bounces twice and beats a diving Kyle Verreynne for four byes which seems a touch harsh on the wicketkeeper.

Pennington resets his sights wide of off stump and Rory Burns chops it away for a couple of runs.

Nothing really to threaten this opening pair of Surrey yet.
