Hunting wickets is the key for South Africa. England's lower-middle order can be so dangerous, especially if you give them a platform at Headingley.

South Africa will be hunting like birds of prey.

  2. Eng 57-2published at 10 overs

Last over of the powerplay but there's no big finish for England.

Just a single from it as Lungi Ngidi keeps it very tight on a surface that increasingly looks a little tricky for batting.

But, as we've seen, if you do make decent contact as a batter, the outfield is lightning fast.

It is staggering how quick this outfield is. It was merely a push from Jamie Smith.

That is a lot of the reason why South Africa wanted to bowl first. Protecting a score here is a difficult ask.

    Lovely timing from Jamie Smith.

He eases the ball through mid-wicket and the speed of the outfield is there for all to see. The ball just keeps going to reach the boundary.

A couple of boundaries but some encouragement for Corbin Bosch in that over, too, with a couple of plays and misses.

South Africa's quicks have forced a false shot with 36% of the deliveries they've bowled so far this afternoon, well above the 21% registered by West Indies with the new ball during England's last ODI series earlier this summer.

  6. Eng 52-2published at 8.1 overs

Lungi Ngidi with something of a throwback to fast bowlers of old... with some distinctly unimpressive fielding on the boundary.

Jamie Smith guides Corbin Bosch's first ball through gully and Ngidi runs round from deep third but decides he doesn't fancy going to ground and instead, half wafts a boot at it as it goes into the boundary cushion.

It is a funny pitch here. There are times when it has carry if you get it in the right area as a bowler but as soon as you miss, it races away. The slope as well is a challenge.

England are going at seven an over without playing a shot that suggests they should be going at that rate.

More cheers as another Yorkshireman walks out to back.

It's England skipper Harry Brook and he's off the mark with a boundary.

Freebie from Lungi Ngidi, wide of off and Brook flays it over the off side.

A good ball by Lungi Ngidi. The seam is wobbling slightly and it was a great diving effort from Ryan Rickelton. He just caught it in the webbing of the glove.

Expect a boo from the crowd as Joe Root walks off.

    Given!

Superb work from Ryan Rickelton, swooping to take a fine low catch.

Movement for Lungi Ngidi, Joe Root fiddled at it outside off and edged it behind.

The ball looked to be going between keeper and slip but Rickelton takes it one-handed diving to his right, a couple of inches off the turf.

It then pops out of the webbing of the glove but he reacts quickly to complete the catch before the ball hit the ground.

Ryan Rickelton is claiming he got that on the rebound. It looked like it bounced back into his hand.

    Is Joe Root gone?

South Africa think so. The England man edged behind and Ryan Rickelton thinks he's taken this at the second attempt.

Great catch if he has taken it.

I was here for a few Hundred games last month and they were high-scoring games.

This pitch doesn’t actually look quite so perfect but when it’s there to hit there’s pace and bounce which helps the batters just throw the hands or ease a drive.

Nandre Burger has got the ball moving either way. He has got it to go across to the right-handers which is something you have to be wary of as a batter.

    He is very skilful.

  15. Eng 44-1published at 7 overs

For four overs, the ball seemed to be coming onto the bat very nicely. In the three overs since, batting has looked that much trickier.

The ball is doing a little bit but it feels as much that South Africa have just adjusted to find the right lengths and not offered England much width.

As if to prove the point, Nandre Burger sends down two short, wide deliveries and Jamie Smith cracks them both away to the fence - once through the covers and the other just to the right of deep third.

  16. Eng 35-1published at 6 overs

Lungi Ngidi has got this ball doing a bit now.

A bit of bounce and some movement off the seam too, causing Jamie Smith to play and miss three times in the over.

The England opener advances to the fifth ball, tucking it away behind square for two - the only runs from the over.

Thick inside edge from Jamie Smith, just missing his leg stump and it looks like he'll get four.

That is until Keshav Maharaj appears, sprinting round from fine leg to make the stop just before the boundary cushion.

Very good fielding, lifting his legs to avoid making contact with the cushion. Two runs saved.

Oof, what happened there? Big swing away from Smith from Nandre Burger and the ball comes off the fingertips of wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton, deflecting it down to deep third for a bye.

England have moved to 29-1 without having to do too much. It is going to be one of those days.

It is save your legs time as a fielder because the ball races away on this rock solid outfield.

Joe Root is looking ominous from South Africa's point of view. A good start from England so far.
