After being it high on the back leg by a nip-backer from Lungi Ngidi, Joe Root walks at the fast bowler next ball but can only prod it to mid-off.

Loose to start the over, four decent deliveries, then another loose one to end it. Wide half-volley and Root thumps it through cover for another boundary.

    Four more for Joe Root.

Freebie on the pads from Lungi Ngidi and Root clips it away through square leg.

Joe Root is in at three, on his home ground, and nails a beautiful cover drive for four to get off the mark second ball.

No need to run for that.

A single follows before Jamie Smith's thick inside edge runs out to deep backward square and earns him a couple.

There was just a hint of late swing from Nandre Burger. A big wicket as Ben Duckett is such a good player.

South Africa are white-ball ready. They played some tremendous cricket in Australia and are a powerful team.

A guilty look from Ben Duckett confirmed what South Africa already knew. Just a little tickle on the bat.

It is surprising you don't see him get caught out like that more often.

    Edged and gone!

Full delivery from Nandre Burger and it swings late, taking a feather of an edge as Ben Duckett prods forward, trying to defend.

Very nicely bowled by the left-armer and South Africa have the early breakthrough.

It looks a belter of a pitch. After watching the Hundred, this looks one of the best pitches to play on.

There is lots of power in both of these sides. South Africa have a very powerful batting line-up with Markram and Rickelton at the top of the order. They will feel like they can chase anything down later.

Lungi Ngidi takes the new ball from the other end. In my head, he's still a young fast bowler with plenty of potential.

The fact he's 29 now and has 110 ODI wickets to his name means in sporting terms he's not that young, while that number of wickets suggests plenty of that potential has already been fulfilled.

Anyway, he starts with three dot balls before Ben Duckett drives the fourth through mid-on for four.

Jamie Smith scored 101 runs off the 56 deliveries he faced in overs 1-10 during the West Indies series, a strike rate of 180.

There are only two instances of a batter scoring quicker in overs 1-10 in a three-match (or more) ODI series, both by England coach Brendon McCullum, striking at 201 in the 2015 World Cup and 195 in a home series against the West Indies in 2013-14.

That was pure balance from Jamie Smith. There is no swing at the moment for Burger and the full face of the blade met the ball. A beauty.

This is the kind of surface where you just need to hold yourself as a batter, you don't need to do too much.

It's a bustling run up from left-arm seamer Nandre Burger and starts with four dot balls.

Tight lines and on a good length. Nothing for Jamie Smith to work with.

But he's too full with the fifth and Smith unleashes a glorious on drive for four.

Four more! Not out of the middle from Smith but it's back past the bowler, straight of mid-off for another boundary.

Sonny Baker is the 14th player to make their ODI debut for England since the start of 2023. Of these 14, 10 have debuted under the age of 25, while Jamie Overton is the only player to debut over the age of 30 in this time.

I am never really surprised about these decisions. We will probably never know the full reasons behind Jamie Overton making this call. But it is indefinite, it is not forever.

He may have a big contract with a franchise team and other things in the pipeline. He probably would have been on that Ashes tour but it is his decision and his choice.

If things go well in this series, Sonny Baker - who has been clocked at nearly 92mph - could even find himself on the plane to Australia for this winter's Ashes.

Especially after bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton announced he will take an indefinite break from red-ball cricket, thus ruling himself out of this winter's tour.

Overton, 31, played in the fifth Test against India at The Oval in July but does not believe his body can sustain playing all formats.

The Surrey pace-bowling all-rounder has a history of back stress fractures which has limited him to only two Tests.

"At this stage of my career across a 12-month calendar, it is no longer possible to commit to all formats at every level, both physically and mentally," Overton wrote on Instagram.

It has been a nice progression for Sonny Baker. It is a lovely moment on days like this, seeing players get their cap and their family watching. He will feel nervous but the boys getting some runs on the board will help to settle him.

Harry Brook said he wants Baker to show off his skills and you need someone with that mindset to help you.

This is England’s first ODI since tweaks to the ICC playing conditions earlier this year. The most significant is a change of the rules around the balls that are used.

As has been the case for a while, two white balls (one at each end) will be used from the start of each innings but now after 34 overs the fielding captain can choose one to continue with for the rest of the innings.

The ICC hopes this will help bring bowlers back into the game.

“The ball's going to be a little bit older when it comes to the back end, so there’s potential for reverse swing there at the end,” England captain Harry Brook said yesterday.

“The ball is probably going to be a little bit softer as well.

“South Africa and Australia have already experienced it, but it's our first time tomorrow. We'll just see how we get on.”
